Texas singer Kacey Musgraves is facing online criticism after insulting Christopher Columbus during a concert. A circulating video showed Musgraves standing on stage with a microphone as she addressed the crowd. The conversation appeared to turn to Columbus Day, prompting the singer to insult the explorer by saying, “Obviously [expletive] Columbus.” Her remark was met with cheers from the audience.
After the crowd cheered in response to Musgraves’ remark, the singer continued mocking Columbus. “Literally the lamest person to probably ever exist. Like for real. What a loser. What a loser Christopher Columbus. We hate you,” she said as the video ended.
Many people oppose celebrating Christopher Columbus, arguing that the holiday overlooks the violence and suffering Indigenous communities endured following European colonization. Instead, they support Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a way to recognize Native American history, cultures, and contributions. The movement has gained support from activists and local governments who believe the holiday should honor Indigenous peoples rather than Columbus.
However, Musgraves’ comments also drew criticism from people who support Christopher Columbus, with some arguing that insulting the explorer during a concert was unnecessary or disrespectful. Others objected to her blunt language and felt Columbus should not be dismissed with personal insults. Their reactions reflected the divide between those who defend Columbus and those who believe Indigenous Peoples’ Day should replace the holiday honoring him.
This is not the first controversy Musgraves has been involved in recently. The singer recently clashed with former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after Noem criticized her and expressed a preference for country singer Ella Langley. Noem also voiced support for Republican Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton over Democrat James Talarico, who had attended Musgraves’ Dallas concert. In response, Musgraves took a jab at Noem’s widely criticized account of shooting and killing her dog, Cricket, in her 2024 memoir, writing on X, “I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.”
Viewers Slam Texas Singer Kacey Musgraves Over Columbus Remark
Many viewers criticized Texas singer Kacey Musgraves for insulting Christopher Columbus during her concert, arguing that she should have shown more respect for the explorer. “Columbus was only looking for a better life and he brought diversity to the Americas, you xenophobic bigots,” one person wrote.
Another commenter urged Musgraves to learn more about history before criticizing Columbus, saying, “@KaceyMusgraves maybe open a history book before you get on stage and call one of the most consequential explorers in history a ‘loser.’ Columbus’s voyages connected the Old and New Worlds and changed the course of human history. Reducing that to ‘lamest person ever’ just makes you look like an uneducated idiot reading talking points.”
Other viewers continued criticizing Musgraves, arguing that Columbus’s historical impact should not be dismissed despite the controversy surrounding his treatment of Indigenous peoples. “Calling Columbus a loser is hilarious. His voyages literally changed the course of world history. You can criticize how he treated indigenous people. But you don’t have to like the guy to recognize what he accomplished. History is a bit more complicated than ‘[expletive] that guy’.” Another person mocked the singer for criticizing a historical figure, writing, “Lol criticizing a man from the 1400’s. That’s where they are at. Okay, got it.”
Musgraves’ comments also prompted discussion about whether celebrities should share their opinions on historical figures and events. The mixed reactions reflected the ongoing divide over Columbus’s legacy, with some emphasizing his role in connecting the Old and New Worlds while others focus on the harm European colonization caused Indigenous communities.
