A Texas man who identifies as a follower of the Church of Body Modification said he was removed from his student teaching placement because of his facial piercings.
The Church of Body Modification (CoBM) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1999 that describes body modification as a form of spiritual expression and religious freedom. The organization advocates for the rights of people who view practices such as tattoos, piercings, scarification, and other forms of body modification as expressions of their personal beliefs, identity, or faith.
The organization has also been involved in legal and public debates over religious freedom. They argue that body modification can carry the same spiritual significance for its members as other religious practices do for followers of more traditional faiths. The Church of Body Modification has attracted supporters who view it as an advocate for bodily autonomy and religious expression. The man shared a video in which he appeared emotional while explaining that he was supposed to begin a student teaching placement in his local school district. He said he had submitted an accommodation request for some of his facial piercings. This is because they could not be replaced with retainers. The video showed that he had multiple facial piercings, including several on his nose and around his mouth.
He said he informed the school that his piercings were “very spiritual” to him. “It helps me feel connected to my ancestry and the culture and my Indigenous ancestry,” he said, adding that the piercings hold religious and spiritual significance in his life. He also claimed that removing them would make him feel “disconnected.”
The man continued by saying that he followed the proper steps. He also informed the school about his affiliation with the Church of Body Modification. He added that he even suggested wearing a face mask while teaching to cover his piercings. “They just wouldn’t budge. Like there was no discussion,” he said regarding the decision that affected his career.
He became emotional again while discussing the decision to remove him from the student teaching placement. “It’s just really frustrating,” he said. He later compared the situation to religious clothing practices such as wearing a hijab. “It’s basically like telling a Muslim woman she can’t wear her hijab if she’s a hijabi and practices her faith that way. That’s the closest comparison,” he wrote in the caption.
