An emotional video from a 20-year-old student based in New York and Texas is circulating online, in which he describes an incident involving a longtime friend he says he has known for eight years. In the clip, the student claims the friend used racial slurs toward him during what he believed was a joking exchange, and shares a secretly recorded moment as part of his account of the incident.
The student in question is Nigel Tatem, a creator known online for sharing content about his experiences in computer science, university life, and personal growth. In the video, Tatem recorded himself giving insight into his claims, opening with, “Two years ago, an old friend of mine called me a slur. It got so bad that when I paired with him in Physics C, my senior year, I had to secretly record some of what he was saying to me as ‘jokes’.”
He describes the situation as part of a longer-running relationship between the two that gradually deteriorated over time, suggesting the tension escalated in an academic setting where he says he felt the need to document parts of their interactions.
Sharing more context, the student includes a secretly recorded clip he says captures his friend making racially charged jokes and comments directed at him. According to the audio clip Tatem shares, his friend can be heard saying, “Go back to Africa, you dirty mutt.” In the background, you can also hear Tatem’s shocked response. Under his breath, he says, “You [expletive].”
The recording of his friend continues, “You big ape. You and your KFC, you love and grunts. You’re a villain, a traitor. You ruined the American dream. You used to be so much simpler when y’all worked for us. You could just tell you what to do and you did it. Then, you had to come along and ruin it, like you knew everything.”
Near the end, you can hear Tatem awkwardly laughing at his friend’s “jokes.” After the clip was played, Tatem took the opportunity to discuss how offensive, “casual” joking can turn into real emotional trauma, and how the line between the two can often be very murky.
Tatem brings up a term called “irony poisoning,” which the New York Times first put into print in 2018. He reads the definition: “a diminished capacity to distinguish between your genuine beliefs and your ironic ones. You start saying things as a joke, but then you get radicalized, such as people sharing edgy memes ending up at White nationalist rallies.”
He goes on to explain that he believes parody, satire, and dark humor are acceptable, and that joking about a group does not necessarily make someone racist. He adds, “The reason this video exists is because I watched in real time over eight years how the line between those two things can get blurred.”
Tatem says he later showed the recording to a teacher, who was reportedly appalled by what she heard. He also makes a personal admission, stating that he has become so accustomed to this type of joking that he often finds himself laughing it off while continuing with his work.
He ends the video by advising people of color to set boundaries and distance themselves when they feel disrespected, warning that otherwise they may end up becoming the target of repeated jokes over time.

The point is what twenty years of research says actually happens when we “joke” casually.
I still believe in parody, satire, and offensive jokes. The line is real, and it’s worth defending. But every “it’s just a joke bro” blurs the lines in your relationship and can even radicalize people.

The video has since spread across social media, drawing strong reactions in the comments and sparking debate over what happened and how the situation should be interpreted.

You were his entertainment smh”, while another offered a more personal reflection, suggesting the pair may have known each other since childhood due to the classroom setting, adding, “The thing of it is , he was recording that in a class room so he probably has known him since elementary school and always considered him a friend. Meanwhile he has racist family at home and started adoption of their beliefs. One sided friendship. I grew up in a small racist town so I experienced it.”
On Instagram, reactions were similarly divided. One user commented, “People have gotten to comfortable being hateful”, while another pushed back on common defenses seen in the discourse, writing, “They always say it’s “Dark Humor” 🙄”.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about how quickly “jokes” can cross a line, especially when they carry racial weight and come from someone considered close. While humor is often used to bond or defuse tension, the video highlights how that same dynamic can feel very different when experienced repeatedly by the person on the receiving end.
At its core, the situation underscores a difficult reality: racism isn’t always delivered in obvious or openly hostile ways, and that ambiguity can make it harder to address in the moment — particularly when it comes from a friend.
