Action-RPGs, while definitely active on the platform, take a backseat on Xbox. They can function relatively well, but PC generally gives them more options as far as the UI goes. Managing inventories in a lot of action-RPG games can be hell. Thankfully though, a few have become more accessible and have made their way onto consoles to great success. One such title in development is The Ascent, coming from fresh indie developer Neon Giant and publisher Curve Digital. Today, the team announces the game is coming to Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC in 2021. You can check out the latest gameplay video, featuring co-op, below.

The Ascent thrusts you into the world of The Ascent Group, a corporate-run metropolis inhabited by the galaxy’s creatures. This packed structure doesn’t take kindly to many, which The Ascent Group has long helped fight back against in order to keep the peace. That is, until now. The Ascent Group has mysteriously shut down and as one of the workers, the world you once worked in has descended into chaos. You must ascend this megastructure slaughtering creatures and rival corporations vying to take advantage of this power vacuum. Do you have what it takes?

When the game releases next year, the team promises The Ascent will be available through Xbox Game Pass. This will let anyone who’s subscribed play completely free, which can be great for those looking for a good co-op game. Tor Frickt, art director and co-founder of Neon Giant, had this to say of joining the service:

Xbox Game Pass is an amazing proposition for us as a small indie developer with a team of only 11 people, because it allows more players around the world to experience our game. To celebrate this exciting news, we wanted to cement the game’s place in 2021’s next-gen line-up by casting light on what players can expect to experience at launch”

I’m genuinely excited about what The Ascent has to offer, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Will you be playing The Ascent on release? Any console action RPGs that you fancy? Let me know in the comments below!
