True story, deadly twist

When it comes to horror movies that make you triple-check your seatbelt on the way to work, it’s safe to say that Final Destination takes the blood-drenched cake. Behind all the over-the-top deaths lies a surprisingly creepy truth: the iconic franchise was originally inspired by a true, real-life incident. Released in 2000, the first pic quickly became a cult hit thanks to its inventive “death has a plan” premise, which turned everyday objects and ordinary situations into pulse-pounding sources of terror.

Shot in Vancouver and starring Devon Sawa as the unlucky teen who sees a premonition of a plane crash, the movie didn’t just make audiences jump. It made them think twice about the random little hazards everyday life throws at us. But what was the eerie story that inspired the film’s overarching plot? Well, it all starts with the writer behind the project, Jeffrey Reddick, who stumbled upon a chilling article back in 1994, before the film was even conceived.

The Unnerving 1994 Article That Inspired Final Destination

Aspiring screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick once came across a seriously creepy newspaper article he couldn’t stop thinking about for days afterward. It was about a woman whose daughter had a “bad feeling” about her upcoming flight to Hawaii. She decided to listen and switched flights at the very last minute. The plane she was originally supposed to be on ended up crashing in a tragic accident. That shocking twist of fate ultimately inspired the idea for the very first Final Destination movie.

The Hawaii flight story perfectly illustrates the seed of fear and fascination that inspired Final Destination. From that single real-life event, Jeffrey Reddick imagined a world where death itself feels like an unstoppable force, setting the stage for the franchise’s signature tension.

In an interview with Collider, Reddick explained:

I was flying home to Kentucky, and I read an article about a woman who was on a flight… her mom said, ‘Don’t take the flight you’re on tomorrow. I have a bad feeling about it.’ So she switched flights, and the plane that she was supposed to be on crashed. And so that put the idea in my head.

That real-life twist of fate perfectly captures why Final Destination still resonates with audiences today. The series took that terrifying “what if you could cheat death?” idea and turned it into a long-running horror franchise filled with shocking, over-the-top accidents that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Decades later, the movies continue to hold a unique and unforgettable place in horror, reminding us that sometimes the smallest choices — or the tiniest gut feelings — can have the biggest consequences.
