The casting for the DCEU’s Supergirl is up, up and away.
As recently reported in Deadline, the Powers-That-Be have found their Supergirl in The Young and the Restless star Sasha Calle.
“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The US, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia,” said Director Andy Muschietti “The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”
For those of you DCEU-acquainted, you’ll know that Andy Muschietti is helming 2022’s The Flash starring Ezra Miller in the title role. So, it’s a huge surprise to see that the DCEU’s Supergirl is actually being introduced in this film. It was previously thought that the character would first appear in her own solo film announced as being in development in 2018, with Ozen Uriel writing the script.
Supergirl’s addition is even more surprising when you consider previous rumors. In September 2020, Previous reports claimed that Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck would reprise their roles as the Batmen from their respective movie universes. However, Keaton himself disputed these claims on Jimmy Kimmel Live! a month later. Even earlier reports claimed Gal Gadot would reprise her role as Wonder Woman, but these were again shot down.
The first actress to portray Supergirl in a feature film is Hellen Slater in the eponymously-titled 1984 flick. She would later play Supergirl’s mother in the 2015 and ongoing TV series. In the aforementioned Arrowverse show, Supergirl is portrayed by Melissa Benoist. The series is set to conclude after its sixth season which begins to air midseason 2021.
Sasha Calle is the first Latino actress to portray the iconic superhero. As to whether The Flash acts as a ‘backdoor pilot’ for the character before she goes on to a solo feature remains to be seen. As is the case with these movies, it depends on Box Office numbers. Do you think Sasha Calle is a good choice for the role? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
