The Expendables is arguably one of most successful action franchises in recent years due to its memorable cast and spectacular set pieces. Now the fourth chapter in The Expendables series is set to enter production in 2016 and will be filmed in China. According to Variety, the movie is slated for a 2017 release, but neither the cast or director have been picked. Given the large amount of guest appearances, cameos, and core characters one can always expect a fair amount of variety from this franchise. It’s yet to be revealed if Sylvester Stallone will reprise his role though it would be surprising if the film moved on without him. The studio stretched to ensure that The Expendables with maintain its “all-action star formula” and boasts a budget of $100 million
It may, however, come as a surprise to some just how successful The Expendables series has been in the Chinese market, which explains why the movie would move to the country as a production location. In the North America The Expendables 3 made around $39 million, in contrast the same film made as whopping 78 million in China alone. Steven Paul of SP’s International Pictures explained that “What seems to work in their favor in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot’em up entertainment.” The Expendables is one of the most successful independent franchises to come to China, so it will be interesting to see if they follow the market in casting Chinese action stars. The Expendables is also set to have a television series release, but details on that are still scarce.
