Fox has made it official that they plan on renewing their new X-Men series, The Gifted, for a second season. The announcement came during the Winter 2018 TCA Press Tour, where the relenting question of whether the series would endure through its relatively low ratings was answered. The show aired its 11th episode this past Monday, while the 12th and 13th will air next week as a 2-hour season finale. Much like the cancellation of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency after two seasons, The Gifted has raised a lot of questions for fans that would’ve been left unanswered if a second season wasn’t ordered.

The series hit a low point going into December, as only an average of 2.8 million viewers were watching. The steady decline of viewers since the season premiere is somewhat of a surprise to me, because, since that episode, the show has only gotten better. The countless ethical questions raised by certain situations have helped with that, but I think that major pull for fans is the way that The Gifted has brought on-board a healthy amount of characters known from the X-Men comics to the show. For example, The Stepford Cuckoos and Rory Campbell (aka Ahab and his Hounds) are some of the more obscure characters to be involved with the show, while at the same time referencing to some well-known mutants such as Magneto, Emma Frost and the rest of The Hellfire Club, and the X-Men themselves.

Check out the official press release from Fox below, which goes into detail on the season finale next week and helps The Gifted‘s ratings look a little better.

FOX has renewed THE GIFTED, the family adventure series set in Marvel’s “X-Men” universe, for a second season.

In the all-new, two-hour season finale of THE GIFTED, “eXtraction/X-roads,” airing Monday, Jan. 15 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, Dr. Campbell (guest star Garret Dillahunt) attends the Humanity Today summit, attempting to take the Hound program national, while some of the team at Mutant HQ go on a dangerous mission to stop his efforts. Then, the Mutant HQ comes under attack. With everything to lose, alliances shift and relationships are put to the test.

Ranking as the No. 3 new drama of the 2017-2018 season, THE GIFTED is averaging a 2.0/7 in Live + 7 ratings and has built upon FOX’s year-ago time period by +18%. The GIFTED averages 8.3 Million Total Viewers across platforms, representing a +146% lift from its Live + Same Day delivery.
