Marvel has put the final nail in the coffin of the Krakoan Era. This week’s Rise of the Powers of X serves as the official finale of the five-year event. The entire Krakoan Era began back in 2019’s House of X and Powers of X from Jonathan Hickman. This era saw the X-Men and mutants take a place of respect (and fear) in the world. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, as this year has hosted the Fall of X event. This event has been building to the end of this prosperous time for mutants as Marvel plans to reboot the franchise this summer. Now, the Krakoan Era is officially over.
The end of the Krakoan Era has been playing out in the dual series Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X. Each series dealt with the two wars that mutants faced as their world crumbled around them. In Fall of the House of X, mutants take on Nimrod and Omega Sentinel on Earth as well as an organization of mutant haters known as Orchid. The fifth and final issue of that series saw the mutants triumphing over their foes.
Meanwhile, Rise of the Powers of X focused on the battle between the Phoenix Force (Jean Grey) and a transformed Nathaniel Essex known as Enigma. The two entities played a cat-and-mouse game where Enigma would alter the timeline to stop the Phoenix from existing while the Phoenix would correct the timeline. In the finale, Jean Grey uses the Phoenix to become an avatar of all mutants. To stop Enigma once and for all, she stabs him in the head with Wolverine-like claws, successfully trapping him in a loop of his final moment.
What Comes After The Krakoan Era?
With Enigma defeated and the Krakoan Era over, what comes next? Well, Marvel is already hard at work on the next relaunch. This summer, we will see the reboot of the X-Men under the tagline “From the Ashes.” It will follow the mutants as they pick up their lives after such an altering event. However, you can expect the same excitement and drama as previous eras.
Rise of the Powers of X #5 is on sale now.
