The newest episode of Ahsoka, Part Three: Time to Fly, introduced a character into live-action for the first time. Jacen Syndulla’s appearance in Ahsoka means that he has joined the ranks of Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and a couple of other characters as Ahsoka also marks their first live-action appearances. We don’t know what happens to these characters, and yet Ahsoka might have just given us a large hint regarding Jacen Syndulla’s fate later on in the Star Wars timeline.
But, for those not well-versed in the Star Wars universe aside from the movies or live-action shows, you might be a little confused as to who Jacen is. So, let’s make sure you’re caught up on Jacen Syndulla, and his role in Ahsoka.
Who Is Jason Syndulla in Ahsoka?
Like his mother Hera Syndulla, Jacen Syndulla first appeared in the animated series, Star Wars Rebels. He appears in the final episode of Rebels, Family Reunion – and Farewell. Jacen’s parents are Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus, so he is half-human and half-Twi’lek. Kanan was a Jedi Knight who died in Rebels. He trained Ezra Bridger, the character that Ahsoka, Hera, and Sabine are trying to find in Ahsoka. Kanan died saving Hera and the rest of the crew from an explosion, and she was pregnant with Jacen at the time.
In Ahsoka, Jacen Syndulla is played by Evan Whitten. Whitten also played the young version of Elliot (Rami Malek’s character) in Mr. Robot. He has also appeared in I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, Next, and The Rookie. It’s unclear if he will appear in any of the other episodes of Ahsoka, as his appearance in episode three might have just been a cameo, especially if the story starts to focus more on Ahsoka and Sabine’s journey with Hera removed because of her position in The New Republic.
Jacen Syndulla is also not to be confused with Jacen Solo, the Star Wars Legends character who was the child of Han Solo and Princess Leia. The spelling of the character’s name is not a coincidence, as it is a nod to Jacen Solo. In Ahsoka, Jacen Syndulla mentions that he wants to be a Jedi, like his Aunt Sabine and his father. Unfortunately, this might be a bad sign for what happens to Jacen in the years to come. This is because of the events of the Sequel Trilogy of Star Wars films, and what happens to the Jedi in The Last Jedi.
Jason Syndulla & Kylo Ren The Last Jedi Connection Explained
Shown in a flashback in The Last Jedi, and spoken about throughout The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker fled his Jedi Temple after Kylo Ren destroyed it, killing all of the other Jedi in the process. If Jacen fulfills his dream of wanting to become a Jedi, he might be one of the Jedi that Kylo kills. After all, Hera knows Ahsoka who knows Luke, so the chances of her introducing them would be high, especially if Jacen turns out to be strong with the Force. If Jacen does undergo training with Luke, he’d probably be dead by the Sequel Trilogy.
With that being said, there’s always the chance that he doesn’t have an affinity for the Force, and joins his mother in The New Republic instead. Not that joining The New Republic would necessarily secure his survival by the time the First Order sweeps through. We might see his fate in one of the Disney Plus series to come, or in the Dave Filoni Star Wars film set in The New Republic that was announced this year. After all, Filoni did write both Ahsoka and the episode of Rebels that Jacen debuts in.
Ultimately, while we don’t know what exactly happens to Jacen after Ahsoka, it would be good if we had one Star Wars story that didn’t end with a Jedi dying at the hands of a Sith. With no references to Jacen or Hera beyond Ahsoka, their future hasn’t been written yet. Hopefully, Filoni uses that to his advantage, and steers clear of tying it to the Sequel Trilogy. We might see a happy ending for Hera, Jacen, and maybe even Chopper too. You can watch the first three episodes of Ahsoka on Disney Plus, with new episodes coming to the service on Tuesdays.
