The co-creators of The Last of Us show on HBO, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have revealed through an interview that season 2 of the popular show will only have 7 episodes in total. This means that season 2 will fall two episodes short of the first season, which may seem disappointing for some fans, but the showrunners have provided the reasoning for this decision.
Although the first season of the show consisted of the entire story of the first Last of Us game, the second season will not be doing that. Not only should we expect the upcoming second season, but The Last of Us fans can expect a season 3 and maybe even beyond, according to Mazin.
Why Does The Last of Us Season 2 Only Have 7 Episodes?
This isn’t just to stretch out the show into more seasons, but it’s because the base story material from the first game was nowhere close to the extensive tale told by The Last of Us Part 2. The team is still figuring out how to spread out the show in a way that covers the entire story of the second game while having good break points in between.
So the reason season 2 of The Last of Us is limited to 7 episodes is that it seemed like the ideal break point because pushing it further would demand including an entire story beat. This could have pushed the show beyond 10 episodes.
For better or for worse, the showrunners won’t be sticking to the source material completely, like in season 1, expect the story to include things that you didn’t see while playing the game. This will also happen in season 2, and even season 3.
Speaking on the third season, Mazin believes that they want to make season 3 a lot larger and that the expansive story might even merit a fourth season, which is pretty much a confirmation that The Last of Us show will stick around for a long time.
Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us got a teaser recently and will be released in 2025 and will have Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jessie, and Danny Ramirez as Manny, while actors from season 1 will reprise their roles.
