HBO has released the highly-anticipated first trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 which offers a glimpse into several pivotal moments from the original games, including the teaching scene where Joel teaches Ellie how to play the guitar. Most importantly, the trailer introduces Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Abby in season 2 of The Last of Us, a character that fans have been waiting to see in live-action since the show’s release.
The musical backdrop of the trailer is set to the hauntingly beautiful ‘Future Days’ by Pearl Jam, a song that holds significant emotional weight as Joel performs it for Ellie at the beginning of the second game. One thing that will get most fans’ gears turning is Catherine O’Hara who makes an appearance in the trailer, portraying a character whose identity remains unknown.
While HBO has yet to confirm her role, fan theories are already running rampant on social media, with many suggesting she could be the prophet of the Seraphites, a faction introduced in The Last of Us Part 2. Although the Seraphites’ founder is deceased by the time the game’s events unfold, the series’ tendency to explore untold stories leaves room for this possibility.
Season 2 is set to premiere in 2025 and promises to expand the universe of The Last of Us with familiar characters like Abby, and new ones as well with storylines. Alongside Kaitlyn Dever, the cast will feature Young Mazino as Jessie, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Ariela Barer as Mel, and Spencer Lord as Owen. The upcoming season will only have 7 episodes, which is a significant decrease from season 1’s nine. This is because the studio plans on keeping the show going for a while, possibly going past 3 seasons according to Craig Mazin.
