PlayStation aims to deliver new takes on its flagship games, and we got a taste of one of those anticipated adaptions. HBO released a trailer for its The Last of Us series (seen below). It will star Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey from Game of Thrones fame to play Ellie. The show will take some liberties to deliver a balance of what players know from the game and new subplots and characters for a fresh taste in the Clicker-filled world.

The Last of Us series trailer delivers plenty of footage in its minute and 48 seconds long. Keen-eyed gamers will spot plenty of things straight from the game that Naughty Dog released in 2013, but also some places or people who you will not recognize. It is a tone setter that shows that journey Joel and Ellie will go on and the dangers that wait for them.

The game was released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and developed by Naughty Dog. In 2014, a remastered version upped its textures and resolution for the PS4. A sequel was released in 2020 to continue Joel and Ellie’s story, with a focus on Ellie. As of this year, the first game got a full remake for the PS5 and eventual release on PC to make it look and feel on par with its successor.

The cast will have a mix of Hollywood stars and people who acted in the game. From the game, Jeffrey Pierce, who played Tommy in both games will play a new character, Perry; Merle Dandridge reprises her role as Marlene; and Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who starred as Joel and Ellie in both games, will have unknown roles in The Last of Us series, which is kept even more of a secret as they are not in the trailer. From the world of film, the two leads will be joined by Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) as Joel’s brother Tommy; Nick Offerman as Bill; Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank; Anna Torv (Fringe) as Tess; Storm Reid (Euphoria) as Riley; Nico Parker (Dumbo) as Joel’s daughter Sarah; Lamar Johnson (Your Honor) as Henry; and Keivonn Woodard as Sam.

The Last of Us series is created by Craig Mazin, who made the HBO hit show Chernobyl. Tasked as the creator, writer, and executive producer, plenty of people coming on board, are from the film industry, and some are tied to the video game developer. Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog is attached as a director of an episode and executive producer. Also directing will be Jeremy Webb (The Umbrella Academy), Ali Abbasi (Holy Spider), Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole), Peter Hoar (Daredevil), Liza Johnson (Room 104), and Jasmila Zbanic (Quo Vadis, Aida?).

We may have a teaser trailer for The Last of Us series, but no concrete date. All we know is it will be out in 2023.
