Coffee Talk creator and Pikselnesia founder Mohammad Fahmi died in 2022 at the age of 32. Fahmi’s art and vision, however, live on in Afterlove EP. Fahmi’s last work with Pikselnesia mixes visual novel and narrative adventure with rhythm game elements. It’s a snapshot of life in the streets of Jakarta and the heart of a young musician grieving the girlfriend he lost. Between the manga-inspired art of Indonesian artist Soyatu and the OST by indie band L’Alphalpha, Afterlove EP feels like so many stories I love. It’s a project that somehow channels the anime energy of Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad and Carole & Tuesday. Here’s how Fahmi’s legacy is carrying on.
From Coffee Talk to Afterlove EP
Coffee Talk has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam for good reason. Taking place in an alternative Seattle, its mix of lo-fi music, comfy conversations, and barista business shenanigans creates a hypnotizing atmosphere. Every orc and mermaid to stroll into your cafe is an opportunity to perfect your latte art and maybe feel something for once. The pleasing color palette, musical focus, and relatable characters make Coffee Talk much more than just another visual novel. It’s a small slice of empathy, both sweet and tart. If anything, those vibes feel even stronger in Fahmi’s final project.
Afterlove EP releases on Feb 14, 2025, for PC, PS5, Xbox X/S, and Nintendo Switch. For a piece of art about love, music, and the bone-deep sting of grief, a Valentine’s Day release date feels right. The spirit of passion, creativity, and deep kindness found in Fahmi’s games isn’t going anywhere. If anything, Pikselnesia seems driven to build upon it. The team’s previous work on projects like A Space for the Unbound and Hello Good Boy give me nothing but confidence in Afterlove EP. Get cozy and vibe. This EP is almost ready to drop.
