The L.A. County District Attorney’s verdict is in for the Menendez brothers. Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez are one step closer to the prison exit gates. The DA has affirmed that the convicted brothers will be recommended for resentencing and immediate parole. Erik and Lyle have spent nearly 35 years behind bars for murdering their parents in 1989.
L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón said he will go to court Friday and ask for leniency. He will also recommend them for immediate parole based on their age at the time of the shooting. The parole board will decide the brothers’ fate if the judge signs.
Gascón stated that resentencing is the right approach as the brothers do not pose a threat to society. He acknowledged that the brothers were young when they committed the crime. Erik was 19, and Lyle was 21. The attorney made it clear that his stance was based solely on the facts of the case, not on defending the brothers’ behavior.
He revealed that the brothers have showcased exemplary manners behind bars and have earned his decision. Despite the life without parole sentencing, Gasón believes the brothers have been rehabilitated. The DA reiterated that new evidence surfaced, reignited his interest in the case, and hastened his decision.
Gascón disclosed that the DA’s office was torn over his decision, but it was the right step. According to him, some felt the brothers were not abused and deserved to stay in prison for the murders, per TMZ. “There is no excuse for murder.”
The Menendez Brothers’ Plans Ahead of Possible Release
It looks like Erik’s dream may eventually come through. One half of the Menendez brothers opened up on his desire to head to Vegas after freedom. We reported that Erik’s’ decision to move is fueled by his burning desire to reunite with his wife, Tammi Menendez. The pair got married in 1999, and she currently lives in Southern Nevada.
Erik and Tammi’s relationship began in 1993 when they started interacting via letters, although Tammi was married then. Tammi initially doubted Erik’s account of events but came around after her daughter experienced abuse from her ex-husband. The pair bonded over their trauma, and a serious relationship blossomed.
While it is unclear where Lyle is heading, the 55-year-old is still happily married to Rebecca Sneed. Lyle and Rebecca stayed pen friends for over a decade before finally taking the love plunge. Before saying ‘I Do’ to Rebecca, Lyle was previously married to Anna Eriksson for five years. The pair divorced in 2001, and Lyle moved on with Rebecca in 2003 with zero conjugal visits.
It is turning out to be a great 2024 for the Menendez brothers.
