The Monster Hunter teaser released yesterday has people worried. Following the enormous success of the wonderful Monster Hunter World, hopes were high for the movie. Even after some iffy set photos, this still had potential. However, what it looks like we will get is far different from the expectation. With guns, shouty army soldiers, and not a Hunting Horn in sight, it’s hard to see what this teaser has to do with the games. The only thing missing is Dwayne Johnson (no disrespect, I love The Rock) for this to become just another generic action movie. This is not what fans of the series signed up for!
The Monster Hunter teaser does go on to at least give something to fans of the series to cheer for. Towards the end, we are treated to a glimpse of the Black Diablos. To be fair to Monster Hunter, this bit does actually look great. They really nailed the look of the beastie! Burrowing out of the ground, the Black Diablos is genuinely terrifying. The generic army men, on the other hand, look like a real miss. In fairness to the movie, we do know there will be more traditional Monster Hunter content. Tony Jaa stars as The Hunter and promotional stills of Jaa and co-star Milla Jovovich show them using weapons featured in the game.
It’s Only A Teaser – Don’t Panic
Now, I’m as big a fan of big dumb action movies as the next person, but there really is a feeling here that this could be more than a run of the mill game to movie adaption. The Monster Hunter teaser may not bode well, but this is only the early days. I’m willing to give Monster Hunter the benefit of the doubt until we get a full-length trailer. With the film (allegedly) hitting theaters in December, we hopefully won’t have long to wait.
