‘The Nation Doesn’t Need an Arch’: Federal Judge Halts Trump’s 250-Foot Washington, D.C. Monument as Critics Celebrate

Someone’s finally stopping him

President Donald Trump has spent years pursuing some decidedly unusual ideas, both at home and abroad, from trying to rename places beyond his authority to backing construction projects that have attracted plenty of attention, but far less enthusiasm. Today, the latter category has made it to the news, at least for those in Washington, D.C. Apparently, the President has been trying to build a 250-foot monument, which would include a military complex that no one but him and his allies seem to want, according to those in the city. Well, a federal judge has halted the project at least for a few weeks, and many Americans are already happy about it.

The news has already gone viral in several places, and with good reason, according to some. For those unaware, Trump has backed plans for a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary, later describing it as a “military complex” capable of supporting drones, snipers, and ammunition storage. Republican supporters have framed the project as a patriotic monument, with Rep. Andrew Clyde arguing that it would “commemorate and celebrate our nation” and insisting that “we need this arch.”

Plenty of people appear to disagree. The proposal has faced opposition from veterans, preservationists, lawmakers, and members of the public, with critics questioning everything from its scale and location to its legal authority and impact on the surrounding memorials. What was pitched as a grand national celebration has instead become another argument over exactly whose vision of Washington the capital is supposed to reflect.

Ever since the project was announced, it has met nothing but backlash, at least from locals, as they don’t see this as something urgent or necessary for the city or the country at that. Still, it seems that Trump still wants to push for this, among other questionable things, such as declaring the Oval Office a landmark.

In any case, people are now happy after District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued an order halting the project for two weeks. While many were expecting a complete removal of this project, it has bought a bit of time amidst the upcoming legal battle to see if the arch becomes a reality or becomes another questionable idea from Trump.

Many in Washington, D.C., Believe There Are More Pressing Matters

Since the arch is something that wouldn’t really benefit Americans, some have already talked about the things that people really need right now.

“We need affordable healthcare. We need wages to go up and costs of housing and groceries to come down. The nation doesn’t need an arch.“

“Could you imagine how great things might be if Trump put as much effort into actually making America great, for its citizens, as he puts into his own personal vanity projects?“

And while many are hopeful because of this news, some think Trump will start the project anyway.

“Who wants to bet he’s gonna ignore them and start construction anyway? When you’re rich, they let you.“

Right now, this temporary measure has paused this controversial construction, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks.
