A heated dispute recently broke out on a waterfront pier in San Francisco, California, between a couple who were feeding birds and a Black man who confronted them over it.
The disagreement reportedly started after the man approached the couple to point out that there was a sign telling visitors not to feed the birds. When the couple claimed they hadn’t noticed it before they started feeding, the man allegedly became antagonistic and the situation spiraled into a full-blown argument.
The incident was filmed and posted on TikTok by the girlfriend. According to her, she and her boyfriend never assumed they were doing anything wrong partly because they had seen another person nearby doing the same thing. It wasn’t until the man approached them after they were already done feeding the birds and getting ready to leave that they realized they had missed the sign.
But instead of walking away after, she claimed the man started lecturing them about what they had done wrong even after she repeatedly asked him to leave them alone. In the video, he could be heard calling their actions “ridiculous” and saying he was “sick of the entitlement” people of their skin color think they have.
The boyfriend asked the man why he was bringing up race like it had anything to do with the situation and what exactly made them entitled. The man responded that they had disregarded the sign when everyone else had seen it.
From there, whatever patience remained between the three seemed to disappear.
It Took a Turn for the Worse
The couple became increasingly frustrated with having to defend themselves, and soon both sides were trading insults.
At one point, the man moved closer to them and the boyfriend immediately planted his arm against the man’s chest to maintain some distance. However, the man pushed his arm away and warned him not to put his hands on him again. He also balled his other hand into a fist.
They eventually managed to defuse that moment, and afterward, the man turned around to leave while throwing a final insult in their direction.
But that was short-lived because when the woman responded with an insult of her own, he came back. This time, the man pulled up one of his trouser legs and revealed that he was an amputee. He told the couple that he had lost his leg while serving in the military and fighting for the country.
In response, the girlfriend said, “I hate the military,” and then used profanity to condemn the institution.
The three continued arguing for a little longer before they went their separate ways, with both sides still boiling over the incident.
Netizens React to the California Bird-Feeding Confrontation
While viewers had plenty to say about the entire confrontation, the woman’s response after learning that the man was a veteran particularly rubbed many people the wrong way.
“You hate the military & cops. That says it all,” one viewer wrote. “Feeding birds and creating chaos is crazy. You hating our military is even worse,” another said. “You hate the military, yet you live in this country free due to it- because you’re an ungrateful entitled piece of [expletive],” a third commented.
A fourth acknowledged that the man could have approached the couple differently but still took issue with the woman’s remark. “Have respect for the military lady. Not saying have respect toward him cause he could have approached better then what he did, but have some respect for the men and women that fight for what you get to do everyday.”
Some also criticized the couple for feeding the birds. “Stop ignoring signs and breaking rules,” one person remarked. “It is stupid to feed birds; they do lots of damage,” someone else added.
At the same time, some netizens were angrier at the man than the couple for bringing race into a disagreement that had started over feeding birds. “Dude lost the second he brought up skin tone,” one comment read. “This guy was a jerk. He totally was being racist,” another claimed.
Not everyone in the comments was interested in picking a side, though. One group argued that everyone involved had allowed a relatively minor disagreement to escalate much further than it needed to.
The woman has acknowledged that she reacted in anger during the confrontation. She said she felt the man had behaved as though being older and a veteran entitled him to continue confronting them, and so she wanted to spite him.
