The medical drama series The Resident has been canceled at Fox after six seasons. Deadline reports that the series suffered significant declines in ratings as the seasons continued. Viewings for season six were down 12% from season five, which was already down 35% from the first season. The Resident suffered heavily in the 18-49 demographic, averaging a 0.5 rating in L7. That’s a 69% decrease compared to the first season. Fox’s cancelation of The Resident makes the season six finale, which aired on January 17, 2023, the series finale. While many medical dramas are known for their long runs (e.g., Grey’s Anatomy and ER), it appears The Resident did not have the staying power it needed for Fox to renew it.
Fox Cancels ‘The Resident’ With No Loose Ends
The good news for fans of The Resident is that Fox didn’t cancel the show with unresolved cliffhangers. Season six ended with show lead Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) declaring his love for Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas). Fans also saw Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) own up to his drug addiction while still keeping his job after saving young Sammie, Bell’s (Bruce Greenwood) granddaughter. Fans also saw Leela Devi (Anuja Joshi) and Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) finally get engaged. It appears all the staff at Chastain Hospital got their happy endings.
According to TV Line, the chances of Fox renewing The Resident seemed dim. Series co-creator Amy Holden Jones admitted that the season six finale was intentionally written as a proper series finale in case The Resident was canceled. This situation is similar to the cancelations of Titans and Doom Patrol in that the writers were warned of a likely cancelation and wrote their season finales to serve as possible series finales.
While The Resident may be canceled, Fox will soon have another medical drama series with Doc,pan adaptation of the Italian series Doc-Nelle tue mani. That show is set to premiere during the 2023-24 season.
