Florida Sen. Ashley Moody announced on Monday via X that she is introducing a new bill to protect older Americans from scams and financial exploitation. Moody said it had been a longtime priority of hers to protect seniors from falling victim to those who would want to “take away their sense of security and peace of mind.” However, critics reacting to the Republican lawmaker’s proposal have shifted the conversation toward Congress instead and accused politicians of being among the biggest scammers in the country.
In the video posted to X, Moody said she is sponsoring the Stop Scams Against Seniors Act. The senator said the bill would create elder justice task forces that would allow local, state, and federal agencies to coordinate in investigating and prosecuting scammers who prey on vulnerable older Americans.
“Our seniors worked hard their whole lives to build financial security,” the former AG stated. “They shouldn’t have to worry about scammers or fraudsters stealing it away.”
According to information released by Congress.gov, the legislation would provide federal grant funding to help law enforcement agencies combat fraud schemes targeting people aged 60 and older.
In response to the video, many netizens in the comments expressed disappointment and accused the lawmaker of contributing to the problem. “What a joke…” one commenter wrote. Another said, “Look in the mirror, you are the scammer.” A third remarked, “The scams start in congress. Stop preaching your [expletive].” Someone else claimed, “Moody can’t run on her record in the Senate because she’s done nothing for Floridians.”
Several people also criticized the senator for failing to address other issues they consider more important, especially the passage of the SAVE America Act. “You’re doing everything but pass the SAVE America Act which over 80% of all Americans want you to do. You should be very ashamed,” one person commented. Another urged, “Do your job and Pass the SAVE America Act! No more excuses!” A different netizen added, “It would help most by securing our elections instead of bloviating on social media.”
Not all of the responses were negative. A few viewers said they welcomed additional efforts to combat these scams. “🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 this becomes law. I’m tired of the robo calls, email and messaging scams that appear multiple times daily on my phone,” one supporter shared.
The Stop Scams Against Seniors Act has received endorsements from several organizations, including the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association, AARP, the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program, and the National Crime Prevention Council, according to Moody’s office.
