The Texas Senate Is Debating Over What Counts as a Flag and What Doesn’t, ‘All the Time and Money Spent To Do Nothing’

Is this how the Senate spends its time?

We’ve talked about how the government around the country has been on a roller coaster. From weird bills to fails on live TV and strange happenings, everything is adding to the ongoing chaos. Recently, the SB 762 bill was filed in the Texas Senate, specifying which types of flags are allowed to be displayed in schools. Due to this, two Senators took the time to discuss what classifies as a flag and what doesn’t, which led to a strange exchange between the two. Naturally, people wonder if this is how the Senate should be spending their time.

Can't get over this exchange in the Texas Senate about what counts as a flag

The Senate Flag discussion comes from user chrisvatx, who posted the clip on the Texas subreddit. In it, we can see Senator Campbell and Senator Eckhardt discussing what classifies as a flag. If you didn’t know, the SB 62 bill is attempting to ban Pride and other advocacy flags inside classrooms. As you can imagine, many are against this bill, and with good reason. However, it seems the Senate is having a hard time figuring out what is a flag and what isn’t.

In the clip, you can hear Senator Eckhard trying to clarify what flags are permitted in the school. During the questioning, Senator Campbell said that a flag is anything that is “from fabric.” However, Eckhard asks that if someone draws a flag on a piece of paper, does it count as a flag? Campbell says that if it isn’t defined as a flag, then it is fine. Then, Eckhard asks if someone displays a paper with a flag drawn on it on the wall, does it count as a flag? And well, Campbell stays silent for a moment and just says, “No.” As you can see, this exchange is quite awkward and makes it seem like the people voting for this bill don’t even know what defines a flag. Then again, it seems you can still display flags on papers, so that’s a helpful loophole.

In any case, a lot of people had comments about this “discussion.”

“So there’s absolutely no point to the law. All the time and money spent to do nothing. Genius!” – GravitationalEddie via Reddit.

“Paper flags for the win !!!” – RuckRidr via Reddit.

“Is the flag in the room with us?” – Aloeicius via Reddit.

As you can imagine, many people are against the bill. Whether the bill will pass or not still remains a mystery, so we’ll just have to wait and see how everything unfolds.
