Should nature come first?

A couple who purchased a historic 1940s home in a Florida neighborhood is facing backlash for cutting down a century-old oak tree growing near their house. The woman explained that the tree stood about a foot from their home and that its roots were damaging the foundation. She said that while it was heartbreaking for them to remove it, doing so was necessary to preserve their home.

However, some netizens criticized the couple for not prioritizing the old tree over their house. They argued that nature should be preserved and should not be disturbed.

The issue came up when the woman posted a TikTok video joking about how she would shyly introduce herself to her new neighbors after cutting down a tree she claimed had shaded half the neighborhood. The couple had only recently moved into their home and were still renovating parts of it.

The woman said they would not have touched the tree if it had not been causing significant damage and making the area unsafe. She added that the city arborist they contacted quickly gave them approval to cut it down after inspecting the damage.

The video drew massive attention on TikTok. Some people in the comments slammed the Florida homeowners, saying they would be angry if they were their neighbors.

“Sorry but I’d be hating you so much,” one commenter wrote. “The tree was there first,” another argued. “I’d definitely be one of the pissed off neighbours. I absolutely adore old historic buildings but nature should always come before human housing in my opinion,” said a third. A fourth even claimed, “We were never meant to live in houses and now we are destroying history for them.”

Some people, however, found those arguments ridiculous. One person remarked, “People valuing a tree over an entire house brotha.” Another said, “These comments are so over dramatic.” A third argued, “Im pretty sure her house is more important cuz SHE LIVES THERE. Why would she keep a tree and destroy her home?” Someone else added, “They act like you did it to build something new not preserve something old.”

Others offered suggestions on what the Florida couple could do to make things right. “For every tree removed two should be planted in a suitable place. Only way to protect the planet and environment,” one commenter suggested. Another chimed in, “I would literally write a letter and drop it in their mailboxes explaining why.”

The woman seemed open to those suggestions. In her replies, she said she was already planning to plant more trees and wanted to make it up to her neighbors. She added that she understood why many people were upset but maintained that removing the tree was necessary to save the home they had fallen in love with.
