Mariah Carey suffers the death of her mom and sister on the same day, and new revelations add a twist to the tragedy. The singer released a statement this week, confirming the passing of her mom, Patricia Carey over the weekend. Coincidentally, her sister, Alison also died on the same day, hitting Mariah’s family with a double tragedy.
Since then, the crooner has received goodwill messages and condolences pouring in from across the globe. However, these deaths have highlighted the fractured relationship dynamics between Mariah Carey and her family, especially her sister Alison, leading friends to question whether she deserved the sympathies her “prepared” statement attracted.
How Did Mariah Carey’s Mom and Sister Pass?
In her statement to People, Mariah Carey revealed the death of her mom “this past weekend.” She also confirmed that her sister Alison passed on that same day in a tragic turn. Although the singer failed to disclose their respective causes of death, the statement confirmed Mariah spent her mom’s final days by her side.
Like Mariah Carey, her mom Patricia also had a flair for singing, making a living as a vocal coach. Although their relationship was riddled with a mix of “jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” the pair eventually found common ground, finding peace with each other before Patricia’s passing. Sadly, the same couldn’t be said of her sister, Alison who died in a hospice.
Mariah Carey Had No Contact With Sister Before Her Death
In her Statement announcing the double tragedy, Mariah Carey avoided any mention of her sister beyond the date of her “tragic” passing. Notably, the singer is the youngest of three children born to Patricia and Alfred Carey. Her elder brother, Morgan Carey was born in 1960 while Alison arrived in 1963, six years before the crooner’s birth.
In her 2020 Memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer touched on her strained relationship with her sister. According to her, Alison’s struggles with addiction, and the traumatic events of their childhood made it “emotionally and physically safer not to have any contact” with her siblings.
Mariah Carey recounted her experience as a 12-year-old when her sister allegedly forced her to use drugs and tried selling her to a pimp. Her memories of Alison also included instances of inflicting her with third-degree burns, making her preteen years her most traumatizing.
However, Alison denied these “cruel and outrageous allegations,” taking legal action against her as a result.
Alison Made a Public Plea to Her Sister in 2016
While the childhood memories admittedly took a toll on Maria Carey’s relationship with her sister, Alison’s addiction reportedly led to its complete collapse. According to TMZ, Alison spent many years battling addiction, with Mariah Carey trying to support her financially and emotionally. Eventually, she deemed Alison beyond redemption, forcing her to withhold assistance and stop being an “enabler.”
In 2016, Alison, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1990, made a “desperate” public plea to her superstar sister to come to her aid financially and not abandon her. While the outcome of the desperate plea remains unclear, Mariah Carey remained estranged from Alison until her death in August 2024.
Friend Slam Mariah For Playing Victim Despite Abandoning Sister
A friend of Alison, who revealed she died from “internal organ failure” is speaking out against Mariah Carey. The pal, David Barker slammed the crooner for abandoning her sister in hospice care despite her dying wish to “at least have a conversation” once more.
According to David, Mariah, like other family members knew she was in hospice care. However, she never called or visited Alison which left her hurt and heartbroken. He also accused Mariah Carey of making everything “just all about her,” as usual, by stirring sympathy cards with the statement announcing the double tragedy. He believes Mariah only intended to sway emotions through the statement, despite having no real concern for her sister.
