Every year, many new seasons or new anime series make their debut, although very few are ones that really leave a mark on viewers. It’s easier to identify the best adaptations, but others leave such a bad taste in your mouth that they deserve to be the worst anime, and 2024 has its own. We’ve already seen them, so you don’t have to, but if you insist, here are our reasons to consider that you should skip these series.
10. A Girl and Her Guard Dog
It’s not the first and it won’t be the last anime I will see with a story that is not so politically correct, to say the least. Many adaptations include an age gap, an imbalance in the couple, or the fact that they meet each other in strange ways. However, A Girl and Her Guard Dog surpassed every situation because there are many years of difference between the protagonists, as Uto has known Isaku since she was five years old, making me feel icky. Also, both are part of a Yakuza family, so Uto tends to be more aggressive. At least in Yakuza Fiance, both protagonists are the same age, but that doesn’t make it any better.
9. A Condition Called Love
Many fans were excitedly waiting for this romance anime, saying that it boasts one of the best stories. As an ordinary viewer in this first season, I only saw Hananoi and his red flags. I know the arc ended before Hananoi could enter the stage where he is more relaxed and has learned not to be so toxic. I think the studio should have made the season longer and rushed some character development to get a taste of a nicer romance.
8. Re: Monster
I won’t deny that I was curious to see how they handled the story of a character who is usually a villain in any other Isekai-style fantasy adventure anime. However, I ended up leaving the anime because the story didn’t take me to any important point and because the character design caused a lot of uncanny valley for me. Not to mention that the animation didn’t deserve any kind of recognition, either, making it one of the worst anime of 2024.
7. Go! Go! Loser Ranger!
As with Re: Monster, I started this anime because it sounded intriguing that a minion would become the main threat to the heroes. Sadly, Soldier D lost focus and motivation as more chapters went by. In the end, it wasn’t clear if he wanted to look for his leaders, be a villain, or be a Ranger. Also, the exam arc ended up being too long and complicated, making it another one of the worst anime of 2024. Still, the battles were interesting, and I wanted to see some of the secondary characters. Not to mention that the cast also has great voice actors.
6. Vampire Dormitory
Vampire Dormitory is a great option if you want to watch an anime full of clichés and not think too much. However, what attracted me was that its main plot seemed more like the style of Ouran High Host Club, where the main character is mistaken for a boy, and there are more ships between boys. Sadly, as the plot progresses, it gets more complicated and loses sense, while the characters get dumber and dumber and show more of their very flat personalities. Although the animation is not the best, it doesn’t lower its quality.
5. Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc
I’m very sad to put Demon Slayer on this list, especially because Ufotable generally has great adaptations with beautiful animation. Yet, the quality of the adaptation is not enough to save the season. The biggest complaint among fans is that there were too few episodes, and they were too focused on training rather than story. In the previous season, Nezuko could finally speak again, and she was completely left out of this arc. Also, they left the central plot and the best battle for the last episode. I understood that the studio wanted to make a bridge to the Infinity Castle movies, but the structure ended up being strange.
4. Whisper Me a Love Song
What bummed me out is that there is little Yuri anime, and this one, in particular, has a great cast. Although it started with great animation, it quickly went downhill, and its PowerPoint-style transitions didn’t help. Also, the biggest problem was this anime’s problems during its production, which ended up causing the episodes to slow down and finally go into hiatus. All this while, the ships didn’t settle well, and we didn’t even have any truly romantic scenes before the indefinite hiatus.
3. Unnamed Memory
This light novel has great popularity, and that is what attracted a lot of attention from the general public. However, the fans were sad that the story did not focus on the most critical points and generally felt rushed. While for those of us who did not read the light novels, the anime lost coherence during its mid-season. Its superb animation was overshadowed by the way the plot unfolded. It remains to be seen if Unnamed Memory improves for its season 2 or repeats the result of the first part as one of the worst anime of 2024.
2. Metallic Rouge
This anime promised too much with a futuristic premise and fights with “mechas,” mainly because this work was supposed to be Bones’ way of celebrating its 25th anniversary. Originally, Metalic Rouge was supposed to have 24 – 25 episodes, but it was cut in half for unknown reasons. This only resulted in a rushed plot for the final chapters; too much information to process made the whole story feel poor. It’s a pity because this anime has a great soundtrack, good characters that could have been better used, and a world that was not explored in depth.
1. Uzumaki
The Uzumaki manga is already a must-see classic, so fans and non-readers were expecting a lot from this adaptation. However, in return, we received one of the worst animations of the year and one of the worst-pacing stories. The first two chapters have a good structure and animation, but everything goes to ruin by the third episode. So it’s very sad to see that the works of the acclaimed Junji Ito have such a mediocre destiny as to be the worst anime of 2024.
