Former Vice President Kamala Harris posted a video on X on Thursday, calling on Americans to “turn out in big numbers” to vote in the upcoming midterm elections in November. The Washington, D.C., Democrat stated that it was essential for voters to come out in droves, claiming that attempts were being made to “cheat” ahead of the elections.
Harris’ post came days after the Supreme Court handed the Trump administration a victory in its plans to restrict mail-in voting ahead of the midterms.
According to Reuters, the Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower court order that had prevented the administration from carrying out parts of Trump’s March executive order to overhaul mail-in voting rules. The 6-3 decision, which came from the court’s conservative majority, dealt with an injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in a lawsuit brought by 23 states and Washington, D.C.
In response to the ruling, Harris stated that the Supreme Court had “backed up the president’s agenda.”
“[Trump’s] trying to make it more difficult for you to vote by mail,” the former VP said while addressing voters. “He doesn’t want you to vote by mail because he knows you’re paying attention… Gas prices are up. Food prices are up. He got us in a war that the American people don’t want. And he is worried he is going to lose the midterms.”
Harris claimed that the prospect of losing in November had Republicans now “trying to cheat.” She urged Americans to counter that by turning out in numbers that would be “too big to rig.”
Netizens’ Reactions to Harris’ “Cheating” Claims
Harris’ accusation that Republicans were trying to cheat drew pushback from critics on X, who turned the same allegation back on Democrats.
“Let it go w the TDS already. If democrats didn’t plan on cheating and every vote was legal this wouldn’t even be an issue,” one person claimed. Another agreed, writing, “There is no good reason to stop this other than an intention to cheat.”
A third said, “They are not putting obstacles, they are keeping our country safe from you Democrat idiots trying to destroy it.” A fourth added, “Why do we need mail in voting? So democrats can cheat. Get out of your pajamas and go vote on Election Day. Take your ID with you.”
Some also harshly criticized Harris in the comments, claiming she was not being honest. “Kamala, you are wrong and attempting to manipulate people,” one critic commented. Another remarked, “Why anyone would believe a word you say is beyond me.” Someone else mocked, “It’s scary to think people like you are running for President… We see through your [expletive] fake lies.”
For now, the legal battle over Trump’s mail-in voting order is far from settled. While the Supreme Court determined that the states had challenged the order too early, it left open the possibility that another challenge could be brought closer to the election.
In addition, Judge Talwani reportedly issued a fresh 14-day temporary restraining order on Thursday, which halts the U.S. Postal Service from enforcing the ballot restrictions for now and allows states to challenge them as the rules are finalized.
