An Oregon woman is going viral after confronting a librarian over what she believed was unequal enforcement of library rules. After she questioned why she was asked to lower her headphones while nearby children continued making noise, the video sparked a heated debate across TikTok.

Posted to TikTok by @hunkeh_tamer2, the video begins after a library employee approaches the creator about the volume of her headphones. The creator then questions why she was singled out while children elsewhere in the library continued making noise.

“Why is she able to be disruptive, disrespectful but I, as a Black person in the library minding my own business in a corner, actually get approached?” she asks.

The employee acknowledges the children but says they’re part of a tutoring program. The creator disputes that explanation, saying the children she was referring to were not part of the tutoring program but were instead with a nanny and making significantly more noise than her headphones. “They get to have that freedom, that privilege… a privilege certain demographics aren’t allowed to have,” she says.

She goes on to explain she’s been visiting the library for years and this wasn’t the first time she’d experienced what she believed was unequal treatment there. The video ends with the creator encouraging the employee to bring the conversation back to the rest of the staff in hopes it won’t happen again.

TikTok Has Thoughts

@hunkeh_tamer2’s composure became one of the biggest talking points in the comments, with many praising how calmly she handled the confrontation. “This is black excellence in REAL TIME!” one viewer wrote.

Others pointed to the background noise in the video itself, arguing it undercut the employee’s explanation. “The fact that we all can hear them screaming and yelling in the background in a VIDEO and he’s pretending like it doesn’t exist,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Libraries aren’t even quiet spaces anymore and they are mad that your headphones aren’t soundproof?!? absolutely policing you because you are Black.”

Some viewers took the conversation a step further, arguing the issue wasn’t the employee but the library itself. “They don’t want Black people there. That’s why they’re being racist,” one user suggested. Others broadened the discussion beyond the library, with one viewer writing, “Most of Oregon is racist af.”

The exchange sparked a broader conversation in the comments, with many viewers sharing their own experiences of feeling singled out in public spaces, while others debated whether the incident reflected inconsistent enforcement of library rules or something more.

As of publication, the library has not publicly commented on the interaction shown in the viral video. Because the recording begins after the employee approaches the creator, it is unclear what occurred before the exchange.
