‘They Knew What They Were Voting For’: Ohio Job Losses Ignite Brutal Backlash After Trump Rally

Ohio’s red wall meets reality

Donald Trump has now come and gone from Ohio, but nearly 1,400 laid-off factory workers are still staring at an uncertain future, and some locals have little sympathy left for voters who helped put Republicans in power.

Trump rallied supporters at Butler High School in Vandalia on Saturday, October 3, campaigning for Republican Sen. Jon Husted and other GOP candidates ahead of November’s midterms. He talked up his economic record, praised new investment in Ohio and insisted the state was prospering. WHIO report on Trump’s Vandalia rally

Just three days earlier, almost 1,400 employees at the former Navistar truck plant in nearby Springfield had been laid off, effectively wiping out around a year of job growth across greater Dayton.

For some Ohioans discussing the news online, the contrast was infuriating.

One Reddit commenter boiled that frustration down to six words: “They will still vote red party.” Another was even more cutting: “Trees voting for an axe.”

The Rally Did Little to Cool Ohio’s Anger

Trump used Saturday’s appearance to argue that Republicans deserve credit for Ohio’s economic direction. He highlighted major investments and defended controversial data centers, while telling supporters that Republican victories would keep the state moving forward. Outside the rally, however, demonstrators were already protesting the administration. One local woman told WHIO that people simply wanted “a living wage” without needing more than one job. WHIO report on protests outside the Vandalia rally

That resentment was much harsher on Reddit. One commenter, who said they had worked at an Ohio auto plant, described watching UAW members support Trump despite believing Republican policies were hostile to organized labor. Another responded to laid-off worker Kyle Bos, a three-time Trump voter who now plans to canvass for Democrats, with the unforgiving line: “They knew what they were voting for.”

Bos complicates the stereotype. He has changed his mind.

“Something has to change politically in this country,” he told the Associated Press.

That may be the real political danger for Republicans. Trump can point to investment announcements and promise that better days are arriving, but Springfield’s workers have something far more immediate sitting in front of them: no job.

Roshel, the Canadian armored vehicle manufacturer buying the plant, says it plans to rehire workers and eventually more than double the workforce. Until that happens, the argument over Ohio’s future will continue. And after Saturday’s rally, angry locals are asking whether losing a paycheck will finally change votes too.
