‘They Tried to Get Me Today’: New York USPS Worker Says Cash Was Left in Mailbox as Bait

What a very strange coincidence…

A New York USPS worker claims they had the last laugh when they discovered a small wad of cash during their mail delivery route. “They tried to get me today,” wrote Reddit user Cons3nt on r/USPS. “First time encountering money on my route, but I’ve been lurking enough to know not to touch it.” Even though they’ve been working for around 8 months and are still fairly new, this courier knows better than to mess with suspiciously placed items like money inside of mailboxes.

Cons3nt doesn’t make any extra comments or provide additional context about what happened later after their discovery. However, no extra context is needed with this post’s comment section, as plenty of Redditors claim to know exactly what’s going on with the randomly placed dollar bills mixed in the mail.

Redditors Agreed That The Cash Was a Setup for the New York USPS Courier

One person says it’s a trap from a postal inspector. “Postal inspectors are overpaid, got nothing better to do, except stalk carriers on their route in their nice AC car writing more paperwork,” said a Redditor. “Just in hopes they’ll catch you doing something to give their job some semblance of relevancy.”

Another person chimed in with their story, saying how they were almost set up by a “mailbox beer.” They said they encountered a beer sitting on top of a mailbox on their route. “Literally three houses down, my supervisor shows up following me,” they recalled. After reporting the random beer, the supervisor went off to ‘inspect’ it and never spoke about it again. “Dodged that bullet like a pro. My bet was he was testing me to see if I took it,” the commenter guessed.

Going back to Cons3nt, many say that they did the right thing. “Don’t touch cash in a mailbox, report it to management and make it USPIS’s problem,” suggested a Redditor. Though, another highly upvoted person believed that if “It’s not mail. It doesn’t belong in a mailbox,” then turning it in is a priority.

A retired courier going by the username Hrdcorefan shows how the temptation trial Cons3nt was put through was nothing. Apparently, Hrdcorefan found a massive mound of cash inside a mailbox back in their postal days. Though they didn’t mention what they decided to do with it.
