As if being detained by ICE agents isn’t horrible enough, some people also have their cars taken away. Recently, a video of a California man confronting an ICE agent has drawn the attention of Redditors. This isn’t just your typical clash between civilians and ICE agents in California. This time, the main issue raised in this video is the fact that the ICE agent is blatantly seen towing away the car of the person they just detained.
The California man shouted, “They’re stealing someone’s car!” and then accused the ICE agent of planning to use the man’s car as decoys. He then insulted the ICE agent and even mocked him for being overweight. He demanded the ICE agent show his face and called him a coward for hiding it. The Californian said that his mask wouldn’t protect the ICE agent. Then, the cameraman continued to follow the ICE agent as he moved toward his car. Insults and shouts were thrown at the ICE agent, who tried to retort but just got outshouted by the California man. The man told the ICE agent to get out of the neighborhood, and the agent drove away.
Redditors applauded the California man for standing up against the ICE agent. The fact that the man showed no fear at all as he faced what many described as the current boogeyman in America amazed a lot of internet users. “I love this man, and I don’t even know him,” one user said. Another said, “This is the energy they deserve for the rest of their lives,” regarding how aggressively the ICE agents were treated in the video.
Some users, however, warned other people to be careful when facing ICE agents. Many believed that ICE agents have been scanning California people’s faces and putting them into Palantir’s database. “Careful when ICE are filming with their phones, they’ve been known to use their phones to scan faces of bystanders and add them into Palantir’s database of ‘domestic terrorists,’” one user said.
The original poster on Reddit said that the cameraman and he didn’t care at all about being recorded in the database. “Not my video, but the person filming this says they don’t care early on in the longer version of this video. I don’t care either if ICE puts me in their database. If it’s my time to go, then it’s my time to go 🤷♂️,” the user said.
Others, however, remarked that if enough people fought against ICE agents, then such databases would be pointless. “So we all get filmed and add 300 million people to that list. The designation will become meaningless if enough people get added,” one Redditor wrote.
