Taika Waititi has hyped up his next Marvel movie as his craziest film to date. In an interview with Collider, he and Chris Hemsworth reveal there is a four-hour cut of Thor: Love and Thunder. Apparently, it is ‘bats— crazy’ and full of so many jokes that it sidelines the story.
“It was about four hours,” Waititi said. “And a lot of time on set … We were talking about this before, like when, in the moment, you’re like, ‘This is the greatest thing that anyone’s ever filmed in the history of filming things.’ And you get into the edit. You’re like, ‘I still kind of like it.’ And then, after about six months of it being in the movie, you realize it was fun on the day but it doesn’t have any business being in the movie.”
Chiming in off the director, Hemsworth revealed he watched this four-hour Thor cut. He simply described it as “bats— crazy, wild, four-hour cut I’ve ever seen.” He said that he “wouldn’t call it a movie.” Waititi referred to it as an “assembly,” and Hemsworth bounced off him to call it an “assembly of, like, madness.”
The problem with this cut that would make it something to see post-release was that it was more jokes than telling a story. Waititi said that it “gives up on the story” as the film goes on “10, 15 minutes of just telling jokes.” Maybe someday, it will be on a DVD or Disney Plus.
Thor Four-Hour cut to one of the shorter Marvel movies
While the four-hour Thor: Love and Thunder cut exists, the actual runtime will be one hour and 59 minutes. This makes it one of the shortest entries for Marvel in years. 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp was the last Marvel movie under two hours, with a runtime of one hour and 58 minutes.
Thor: Love and Thunder releases in theaters on July 8th.
