Matt Damon has reportedly joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder. The Oscar winner and his family recently arrived in Sydney, Australia, the filming location for the Marvel sequel. The news comes from a local outlet, news.com.au, which broke the news early Monday morning. However, Damon will quarantine for 2 weeks ahead of joining the production. In a statement to the local press, which comes via CNET, Damon had this to say:
I’m so excited that my family and I will be able to call Australia home for the next few months. Australian film crews are world-renowned for their professionalism and are a joy to work with so the 14 days of quarantine will be well worth it.”
As many have already noted, this isn’t the first Marvel film Damon will appear in. He hilariously cameoed in Thor: Ragnarok as an actor portraying Loki in an Asgardian play. Additionally, he cameoed in Fox’s Deadpool 2. Lead Marvel producer Kevin Feige recently confirmed that the film’s sequel would be a part of the MCU.
The Impressive Cast of Thor: Love and Thunder
The news of Damon joining the cast doesn’t state who he will play. It would be a great callback to his joke role in Thor: Ragnarok to have him play the same character. However, his statement about calling Australia home for the next few months and the fact that he brought his family with him points to something bigger than a cameo. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
However, Damon joins an already stacked cast for Thor: Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are returning as Thor and Valkyrie. The film will also mark Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster, who will take on the mantle of the Mighty Thor. Portman has been staying in Sydney since last September. Marvel confirmed in November that Chris Pratt had joined the cast. He and other Guardians of the Galaxy stars arrived in Sydney earlier this month to quarantine. And finally, Christian Bale will play the film’s villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
Thor: Love and Thunder will be directed by Taika Waititi and release on May 6th, 2022.
