It’s going to be a big year for Marvel Studios. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and now Thor: Ragnarok, all released over the same 12 months in a studio first.
The third in that list and the third in the series, Thor: Ragnarok, has now begun filming in Queensland, Australia. Taika Waititi, New Zealand director most famous for instant cult classic What We Do In The Shadows, has started off the filming with some typical tongue-in-cheek humour that made the director such a fan favourite in the comedy scene.
However, Taika is not the only person who will be (relatively) close to home for this jaunt. Australian Chris Hemsworth is reprising his role at the eponymous Thor, along with Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and his less-than-jolly green giant alter ego The Hulk. Thankfully, it is currently winter in Oz, so the usual searing heat of the Australian summer shouldn’t be getting him too cranky.
Australia is quickly becoming a very popular destination for filming many movies, including the very popular Mad Max. With an Australian set, an Australian headliner and a Kiwi director, it seems like down-under is swiftly coming out on top when it comes to making the next big films.
While filming has officially begun, fans of the Thor will have to wait until November next year before they get to put their money (and the hammer) down on tickets to this AAA blockbuster. With the huge success of The Avengers and the associated solo films including recent instalment Captain America: Civil War, it would be no surprise if Marvel was expecting this next offering featuring the Norse thunder god to be just as big of a hit.
