For many people in the US, Black Friday is where they go all out in their spending spree, thanks to the huge discounts. While today’s discounts can often feel disappointing compared to the jaw-droppers of the past, Sam’s Club takes the cake as one Florida woman discovered that the store has supposedly committed one of the biggest betrayals to its consumers after marking up its Black Friday sale bins by $1, making it the opposite of a Black Friday sale.
The discovery took place late in November, of course, and was uploaded to TikTok by mrs_yon24 or simply Mrs. Yon. Yon was merely shopping at her usual Sam’s Club, looking for 40-gallon bins, when her companion noticed something out of the ordinary: the orange Black Friday sale price had a yellow outline beneath it. So they pulled the $15.98 Black Friday tag aside and found the yellow $14.98 price tag underneath; the original price was a whole $1 lower compared to the “Black Friday sale” tag.
And while Yon didn’t explicitly say she felt betrayed, her voice might have hinted it, as she immediately blurted, “Behind it! It’s cheaper! They are scamming us guys!” while condemning Sam’s Club’s practice. It’s not clear whether she bought the bins anyway or not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to look elsewhere for 40-gallon containers.
Apparently, some Sam’s Club shoppers in the comment section have also chimed in on the matter, claiming that the same bins went for as low as $11.99 or even $8.99 just a couple of weeks ago. There’s a chance that the tags could’ve been a mistake this time around, as this Holiday week has been rather hectic for many workers, but you never know, and so far Sam’s Club hasn’t addressed the situation.
People online were raising their eyebrows at the raised price
Mrs. Yon’s clip has since gone viral with millions of views across many platforms, as it brought attention to some rather shady sales schemes that many corporations might have been pulling off. People have since criticized the practice, as it essentially ruins the essence of Black Friday sales.
“I learned YEARS ago to always shop the beginning of November that’s when prices are the lowest,” according to another thrifty shopper with another ranting, “what the point of black Friday anymore?” Others have questioned the legality of what Sam’s Club was doing, as it seemed rather rampant and abusive, “Isn’t that illegal 💀” asks one commenter, with the video creator replying, “It should be if it’s not.”
More thrifty shoppers have come pouring into the comment section, swearing that Costco has much lower prices, “Bought them for $7.99 at Costco this past summer ” or that “Costco would never,” supposedly. Regardless, it appears Yon is still stuck at that very same Sam’s Club for now because she can’t convince her husband to get a Costco membership.
