A couple stayed at a hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and soon discovered something unsettling. When flashing a light onto their blankets, they discovered brown spots all over the fabric. Understandably, both of them freaked out, but many viewers online believed there was nothing to worry about.
Ashlyn Dinger shared the sudden hotel blanket realization online. She is a content creator from South Dakota who shares travel vlogs often featuring her fiancé, Jacob Moore. The clip attached above soon went viral, becoming Ashlyn’s biggest one yet. It garnered 5.1 million views, 308,700 likes, and more than 2,400 comments.
At the time, the couple was staying at The Center Hotel Grand Rapids Airport in Michigan. Already upset by the blanket situation, Jacob can be seen with a phone in his hand, its flashlight on. He pressed the phone against the fabric, and brown spots appeared before their eyes.
“Y’all, can we sue?” Ashlyn wrote in the clip’s caption.
The brown spots “spotting” continued, as Jacob grabbed the entire blanket and placed it against the hotel room’s bedside lamp. The entire fabric was “tainted” in the off-putting color. Ashlyn just said, “Ew,” as both of them had this bedding epiphany. Jacob complemented her by repeatedly saying, “Oh my gosh!“
Debate Erupts
As the video went viral, many viewers were worried that the blankets had been infested by some sort of mold. One said, “THAT IS NOT COTTON, that’s mold.” Another one commented, “Nothing warms you better than mold.”
The majority of users, however, told Ashlyn and Jacob that the Michigan hotel’s blankets were nothing to worry about. According to them, the brown spots are burnt cotton due to hotel dryers. Some even said that feathers had dissolved due to the heat, explaining the coloring under the lights.
“That’s the bedding filling…. What exactly do you think keeps you warm under the blanket?” one user asked. Another one wrote, “They’re definitely feathers. Just clumped together and old from washing.” A third one, more skeptical, added, “Feathers or not, that’s gross-looking.”
It appears that the couple had nothing to worry about after all.
