Titanfall 2 isn’t due out for a couple more months, but this weekend, Ps4 and Xbox One players can get their hands on a slice of the game’s multiplayer mode.
The open test will feature two maps: Boomtown and Homestead, two titan variants: Ion and Scorch, and a suite of pilot abilities and weapons. It’s designed to give console players a chance to test out the new multiplayer features while simultaneously testing the game’s servers.
Like the first Titanfall, the sequel features parkour-heavy FPS gameplay. Players will run along walls and clamber up buildings. Killing enough enemy players and AI soldiers will award you with a hulking Titan, a giant mech that falls from the sky, ready to eliminate all in its path. All this is still in the game, but the addition of a grappling hook makes maneuverability even more versatile.
Titans can now wield swords. This will add a much more visceral layer to the mech combat, giving players more options than just an array of heavy artillery. But pilots also have more ways to dole out punishment. The aforementioned grappling hook can also be used on enemies to draw them in and deliver a devastating melee attack.
The first Titanfall was a multiplayer only game, which turned off a lot of potential players. Titanfall 2 will feature a fully fledged single player story, with unique enemies to fight, and a plot thick with intrigue to unravel. While multiplayer is still the game’s key focus, it’s good to know that there will be something for those who don’t want to spend all of their time online.
Titanfall was an Xbox One and PC exclusive when it came out in 2014. The sequel is also coming to PS4, giving a base of over 40 million users the chance to jump into some mech heavy action.
