HBO recently announced that it would be renewing Silicon Valley the fifth season, as the show has grown a rather large and loyal fan base since it’s inception. Unfortunately, one of its key main characters will not be returning next season, as TJ Miller has stated that he will not be returning.
Miller played the role of Erlich Bachman, a software designer and founder of the company Aviato in the show. More importantly, just like most of his other typecast roles, his character served as a large portion of the show’s comic relief.
Erlich first meets the shows main group working as an administrator in the Hacker Hostel, a tech incubator were Richard, Big Head, Gilfoyle and Dinesh live and work, receiving 10 percent of their potential businesses as a result. The pot smoking, foul mouthed software designer is an interesting contrast to the rest of the group of nerds, and as a result is the unspoken leader of the group.
It is unsure just exactly why Miller has decided to not return next season, but his movie career has taken off in the past couple of years, with supporting roles in Transformers, How to Train Your Dragon and Deadpool. The company released this official statement in regards to Miller’s departure.
“The producers of ‘Silicon Valley’ and T.J. Miller have mutually agreed that T.J. will not return for season 5. In Erlich Bachman, T.J. has brought to life an unforgettable character, and while his presence on the show will be missed, we appreciate his contribution and look forward to future collaborations.”
It seems that the two are parting on good terms though, as the comedian’s standup special Meticulously Ridiculous will air on HBO June 17, 2017. There is no word on how the announcement will affect the rest of the show’s current season, nor how they will write Erlich Bachman off.
