Getting bad reviews can be devastating after all the hard work put into creating a show or film. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Holland recalled waking up and seeing the bad reviews coming in for his Apple TV+ limited series The Crowded Room. This is a project that he called the “hardest thing I’ve ever done.” For a guy who has done six Marvel movies, he managed to exceed that high bar of hard work with this emotional mystery series.
Tom Holland may have faced a negative reception for The Crowded Room, but there were still some positive things being said. Despite the 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics applauded the performances, particularly from the Marvel actor. Still, seeing the negative scores and reading the critiques “was a kick in the teeth” when realizing that the first wave of people writing about the series did not like it.
“Rolling over, looking up the reviews, and then all of a sudden I was like, ‘Wow. That’s a bad review.’ Sometimes there’s a redeeming quality in there. There was nothing.”
The Crowded Room Reviews for Tom Holland Were a “Kick in the Teeth”
While it may seem he was down about the negative reception, he’s keeping his head above water. The actor said that “there will be good ones” when it came to reviews rolling in. For him, he has to “try to have a healthy outlook” and “respect everyone’s opinion.” To Holland, what ultimately matters is his emotional well-being, and right now, he is “really happy.”
When audiences were able to see The Crowded Room, it was not only Tom Holland who had interest in the series. With over 500 audience reviews submitted, it sits at 91%, showing that reviews are just opinions and that even something that is deemed bad can find a loyal audience.
The Crowded Room follows the star as a suspect in a crime in 1979 in New York City. An investigator follows the case in an attempt to find the real criminal before any more crimes are committed. The series is available on Apple TV+ and will air its finale on July 28.
