Materia is what makes the world go round in the universe of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The different colors represent their different abilities and can be leveled up just by attaching them to your weapon and using them. As you progress through the world, there are some Materia that you’ll want to have in your party just to make enemy encounters easier.
10. ATB Boost
Just about every attack you make that isn’t your default requires you to have your ATB gauge partially filled. Considering this, it would be in your best interest to grab the ATB Boost Materia. This is especially useful when you’re using Synergy Abilities, which temporarily grants you a third gauge. You’ll be able to land unique blow after unique blow faster than you normally would in tougher battles. You can grab this Materia as part of Chadley’s Materia development in the Corel Region.
9. Magic Efficiency
The Magic Efficiency Materia can also be obtained from Chadley’s Materia development but in the Junon region. This one is pretty crucial to those who are magic users like Aerith and some builds for Cloud. It allows you to reduce the MP cost of spells with the linked Materia in battle. After leveling it to the third tier, the MP cost of linked Materia spells will be reduced by 50%. I didn’t realize how important it was until I delved into what sort of Materia my party members should equip.
8. MP Up
MP Up is a pretty standard Materia for primarily magic-casters. It increases your max MP by 10% the first time and then, at the fifth tier, raises it by 30%. I have it equipped for both Aerith and Cloud to make use of their individual magic abilities. I also like using it with ATB Boost so that I can deal more damage more often in battle. MPO Up is a standard purple Materia that can be found pretty easily. Some characters will already have it equipped on their weapons when they switch to them.
7. Strength Up
The Strength Up Materia is another relatively common. Instead of being useful to those with magic builds, this Materia is useful to those focusing more on strength. When first using it, your strength is increased by 5%, but at the fifth tier, your strength increases by 25%. I have it equipped to Cloud since the very beginning of my adventure. Since you can acquire several of this Materia pretty easily, I also recommend adding it to other party members so that they can have their strength raised, too.
6. Auto-Weapon Ability
I really enjoyed using this Materia on Barret whenever I had him in the party. It allows him to use his weapon abilities even when he is not actively being controlled in the battle. This made for much quicker battles whenever he was around just blasting away at things. Just having the Materia handy allows the activation of the Auto-Weapon. At its second tier, your strength will be increased by 2%.
5. Auto-Unique Ability
The Auto-Unique Ability allows an ally to automatically use unique abilities when not actively controlled in battle. Similar to Auto-Weapon, this one is exclusive to unique abilities. I enjoyed using this as I began to level up my party’s level and obtained more Synergy Abilities. It helped make tougher battles a lot smoother since I didn’t need to control everyone in my party. If Tifa has this one equipped, she will use her Unbridled Strength ability when not actively being controlled as she is in the party.
4. Assess Materia
One of the most useful materia in the entire game, Assess lets you see all the stats of the enemies you battle. When you first encounter an enemy, they’re stored in your Enemy Intel. However, unless you Assess them, you won’t know key information such as their weakness. You only need to Assess them one time to get any information that will be useful, even if you will never encounter that boss again. I always had it equipped to Cloud, considering he is the only character you’ll always have in your party.
3. Jump Materia
The Jump Materia was another one that I always had on Cloud, along with any other party member who doesn’t have the ability to jump to higher ground in battle. Although you aren’t just jumping in the air for battle, it is still useful for flying enemies. Instead, you jump in the air and disappear for a short while before landing and dealing a menacing blow. I particularly enjoyed using this in more flavorful battles when party members have their ATB gauges temporarily raised alongside the ATB Boost materia.
2. Magic Focus Materia
You can obtain the Magic Focus Materia from Chadley’s Materia Development after discovering Gongaga. This is particularly useful for magic users since it increases the potency and duration of spells with the linked materia. I had it attached to Aerith and Red. The first tier increases the potency by 5%, but by the fifth tier, your linked Materia will be more potent by 25%. I always felt that Aerith was too weak as a magic user, so this really helped out during the second half of the game and when completing different types of Fiend Intel.
1. Comet Materia
My personal favorite of all of the Materia you can use is the Comet. It allows you to use the celestial spell Comet that brings a giant comet down from the sky to rain down on your enemies in a fiery explosion. That’s just the first tier because you can upgrade it to Cometeror, which just makes for a bigger blast. You can obtain this materia a little later in the game in the Nibel Region as part of Chadley’s Materia Development for that region.
