Next to the late E3, Gamescom is the biggest annual gaming convention out there. This year’s iteration will begin on August 23rd, and the roster is more stacked than ever! Fans from around the globe will be traveling to Cologne, Germany, to get their hands on some of the most exciting upcoming titles. Here are the top 10 games that gamers hope to hear about at Gamescom 2023.
Starfield
Starfield is already set to be one of the biggest games at Gamescom 2023. Unfortunately, Bethesda has confirmed that there will not be a playable demo. However, there is a silver lining because Xbox has reported that this event will feature their biggest booths ever! It’s safe to say that a hefty chunk of said booths will be dedicated to Starfield, so fans should have plenty of new details to enjoy.
Many fans are already sold on the idea of Starfield and don’t need to hear about the game any further. That being said, we hope to hear more about the story at Gamescom. Bethesda has left us in the dark about Starfield’s storyline for some time, but this might change at this exciting event.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
After being stuck in development hell for a couple of years, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will finally see the light of day. The exact release date for the game is still unknown, so hopefully, an official date will be revealed at Gamescom. We know that developer GSC Game World is planning on having a playable demo available to the public, but that’s about all the information we have.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will release exclusively on PC and Xbox, so expect the game to be a part of Xbox’s show. Maybe it will release in 2023 after all! Plan to hear and see more about this game at Gamescom 2023.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
The trippy, mind-bending thriller that was Hellblade had fans begging for more. After over 6 years of development, we will finally get to experience Senua’s Saga for ourselves in 2024. Although the game has not been confirmed to be at the event, we hope to hear about it at Gamescom 2023, considering its fairly close release date.
The game was originally slated to release across all platforms, but after Ninja Theory was gobbled up by Microsoft, that is no longer the case. Just like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, expect Hellblade 2 to be presented by Xbox — if it is at the show at all.
Metal Gear Solid Delta
Metal Gear Solid Delta will most likely not be shown off at Gamescom 2023, but we can still dream. Sony has already confirmed that they are backing out of the event, and considering their ties with the Metal Gear franchise, such a collaboration seems unlikely.
That being said, very little is currently known about the game, yet fans are hoping to learn more about it at Gamescom. There is currently no release window for Metal Gear Solid Delta. However, it has been confirmed to be released on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
As always, CD Projekt Red is coming to Gamescom. This time, they are bringing the newest expansion to Cyberpunk 2077 with them! The developers have a lot to prove when taking into account the expansion’s $40 price tag. So far, we know that Phantom Liberty is a full-fledged DLC with a brand-new map and story mode. If that doesn’t excite you, just know that Idris Elba is making a big in-game appearance as Solomon Reed.
It seems odd that such a big developer would attend such a large event only to show off a single DLC. Who knows, maybe we will finally get a look at some of their Witcher projects in the works!
Metro 4
Interestingly, 4A Games has announced that they will be attending Gamescom 2023. The last Metro game was released in 2019, and 4A has not revealed anything since.
Because 4A Games’ headquarters is based in Kyiv, Ukraine, many fans sadly assumed they had been unable to develop anything due to real-world events. However, it seems that we have been mistaken! Rumor has it that the 4th entry to the Metro franchise is deep into development and could even be released as early as 2024. Metro would certainly be a big surprise to hear about at Gamescom 2023.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Nintendo has been awfully quiet ever since their wildly successful Nintendo Direct last June. Still, we know for certain that they are planning to attend Gamescom, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder will almost assuredly be shown-off. Especially when taking into account the game’s release date of October 20th, 2023, just a mere 2 months away!
Super Mario Bros. Wonder appears to be a sort of reset for the 2D Mario series. It’s been over 10 years since the last traditional side-scrolling Mario game was released, so the stakes are high. Let’s just hope that Nintendo doesn’t drop the ball with this one.
Super Mario RPG
It is going to be a big year for Mario fans, with Super Mario RPG launching just one month after Super Mario Bros. Wonder! The game is going to be a complete remake of the original 1996 version, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
Once again, the game is not technically confirmed by Nintendo to be at Gamescom, but it seems inevitable. After all, Nintendo only has a few more first-party games in the near future! The original Mario RPG had some serious quality-of-life issues, but we look forward to seeing how Nintendo handles them. Either way, it’s a game that fans are dying to hear about at Gamescom 2023.
Forza Motorsport
Microsoft has confirmed that Forza Motorsport will maintain a large presence at Gamescom 2023. However, for reasons unknown to any of us, there will not be a demo available to the public. This has raised some concern, as many wonder why Xbox has deemed the game unplayable despite its launch being right around the corner.
Nonetheless, the game looks fantastic. It boasts some serious mind-numbing graphical fidelity that blows other racing games out of the water! Forza Motorsport is one of the top games that racing fans hope to hear about at Gamescom this year.
Alan Wake 2
Last but certainly not least, we know for a fact that Alan Wake 2 will be featured at Gamescom. Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind the game, has announced that Alan Wake 2 will make a big appearance during opening night live. A brand-new gameplay trailer will be displayed during the event. Still, it remains to be seen if a hands-on demo will be available.
Although it is a numbered sequel, the game looks more like a series reboot than a follow-up. With more modernized survival horror gameplay, Alan Wake 2 is a perfect game for this Halloween season. The game will launch on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on October 27th, 2023.
