One of the best features of most Call of Duty games is allowing players to discover a side story that revolves around fighting the undead. Over the years it has become one of the main parts of the CoD franchise, making fans wonder if there will ever be a stand-alone Zombies title. Call of Duty Zombies mode features some of the best unique maps, where players have to complete easter eggs and withstand waves of the undead that grow stronger each round. However, not all maps deserve a round of applause, while some others have built strong memories in our minds.
5. Origins
After the destruction of Earth in the main universe, there’s another team of the same characters called the Primis in another timeline. In this universe, the world war begins in 1918, when Nikolai, Dempsey, Takeo, and Richtofen meet for the first time.
This map was the first time that Treyarch developed the multiverse story of Call of Duty Zombies, nurtured in the best way possible. The map is large, contains one of the most difficult easter eggs ever, and comes with many wonder weapons and staffs for killing zombies using four elemental powers.
4. Buried
Buried is the final attempt of the main Zombies timeline’s crew to save their universe in BO2. The Victis team reaches a western town buried underground, where Richtofen and Maxis are still fighting over the control of zombies. The map features two mainline easter eggs, where you can eliminate Maxis and Samantha forever, or put Richtofen into a zombie form.
Buried is the first ever Call of Duty Zombies map to feature the Ray Gun Mark II, which is one of the best weapons in the game. The map has perhaps too much depth in its details and story, allowing players to discover more about the buried town and its killed witch. There’s also an NPC called Arthur on this map. Give him candy and booze, and he’ll keep the Mystery Box in place, kill zombies, and destroy the barriers.
3. Tag Der Toten
A revisit to the mysterious Call of The Dead map, Tag Der Toten is where the Victis crew and all the Aether story get wiped from existence. The objective is to assemble the Agarthan Device, solving the cycle of the multiverse by delivering it to the Premis Nikolai Belinski.
The map features many side easter eggs, three different power switches for each segment of the map, new wonder weapons, and the return of the fan-favorite Thundergun. There’s also an easter egg on this map where you can see a touching view of Mars from one of its moons!
2. Der Eisendrache
You start the game in a castle, the moon shines over you, there are dragons, and you have the Primis crew hunting for another version of Tank Dempsy to fetch his soul. Der Eisendrache is the balance of simplicity and great design for a Call of Duty Zombies map, and it’s even considered as the best by many fans in the community.
The map features a main easter egg where you can finish the job and watch the climactic cutscene. And there are several side easter eggs where you can even blow up the moon itself! The wonder weapons are some iterations of the specialist powers from the BO3 Multiplayer, like Sparrow’s bow. However, they have elemental powers that can cut through the zombies like butter.
1. The Moon
Coming up to the #1 spot, we have The Moon; a Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 classic that introduced the first super-large Zombies map. This is the only map in the CoD series that features low-gravity physics and the Zap Gun. But the main reason The Moon is picked as the best here is its final easter egg. While you can find a lot of references and side easter eggs in The Moon, like Samantha’s hide-and-seek song, and the Space Dog floating around, in the end, you’re tasked with shooting three rockets to earth, shattering the human’s homeland to pieces! Hence the bombed earth in the BO2’s Zombies menu. There’s a unique sense of feeling when you watch our blue planet getting destroyed in the game.
Aside from the scale and the story, The Moon was the first map to feature many new gameplay mechanics that were later used in the next Treyarch projects, like the Mule Kick perk and sharing points with your teammates.
