Total War: Warhammer 3 Players Are Finally Getting Ship Combat, But Not as They Expected

Ships on wheels.

To say Total War: Warhammer 3 has had a rough patch would be an understatement. After the Shadows of Change DLC, many fans voiced their concerns, and Creative Assembly worked hard to regain everyone’s trust. With the new Warhammer 3 DLC Thrones of Decay recently announced, most of the fanbase seems happy, except for one thing. You see, naval combat is one of the features players have been asking for years. In the recent trailer, players saw the long-awaited ships they requested. However, they are not made for water.

Total War: WARHAMMER III - Thrones of Decay Announce Trailer

I won’t lie to you: I’m excited for the Thrones of Decay DLC for Warhammer 3. Shadows of Change left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. But now, it seems the developers are addressing many of the players’ concerns with this upcoming pack. However, there is one thing I find extremely funny, and that is the addition of ships to the game. If you didn’t know when this title launched, many said the lack of naval combat was a missed opportunity, and I agree. Other Total War installments have this feature, and this, being one of the largest games of the series, doesn’t include it.

Imagine my surprise (in a good way) when I saw landships and airships rolling in the latest trailer. I know it wasn’t on purpose, or I’d like to believe that, but it feels like an innocent slap on the face from the devs. “Do you want ships? Here’s you have a few, but they are for land and travel on wheels.” Oddly enough, I think they fit the game’s setting perfectly, and I can’t wait to try them. I mean, any new siege weapon is a win for me, so I have no complaints there.

Overall, the upcoming DLC seems like the developers are taking the game back on the right track. We are getting three new lords: one for the Empire, another for Dwarfs, and one for Nurgle. What excites me is the fact that I can pick which lord to buy (Elspeth von Draken, my beloved, I’m coming for you). This means that we can finally choose which pack to get and focus on that faction instead of getting all and just benching characters left and right. So, pay attention to this upcoming DLC because it’ll launch sometime in Spring of 2024.
