Tron 3 is reportedly in development, with an already written script and Jared Leto signed on to star.
The talks of a third Tron film – which will pick up with a continuation of the plot from the first two movies- has been making the rounds for the past three years, and it’s apparently once again in development after being scrapped in 2015.
The original Tron was a 1982 sci-fi film starring Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who is transported inside of a mainframe computer and attempts to escape with the help of programs. The follow-up Tron: Legacy, in 2010 picked up with Flynn being missing for over 20 years. His adult son, Sam, gets accidentally transported inside the same mainframe computer, where he finds his missing father and uncovers who trapped him.
While it received mixed reviews, the film was hailed for its visual effects and was successful at the box office. The success of the sequel further prompted spin-offs into other media including video games, comics, and a Disney XD animated series.
Originally titled Tron: Ascension, the main cast of Legacy was set to return for the third installment in 2015. However, the project was abandoned due to the critical and commercial failure of Tomorrowland.
Rumours of Leto’s involvement began in 2017, with reports of a new script for a reboot of the Tron series. At the time, there was no confirmation from Disney. However, Disney executive Mitchell Lieb revealed that Tron 3 is officially back in development on an episode of the Light The Fuse podcast in June. He said “Whereas the timing wasn’t right to do it years ago, I think we feel the timing is right now. We learned a lot of lessons from that last movie.”
According to DisInsider, the Morbius actor (Leto) is set to star, and the film will act as less of a reboot and more of a sequel, so it is possible the cast of Tron: Legacy could also return. At the moment, the project has no writer, director, or cast – besides Leto – attached. Regardless, this is hopeful news for fans of the franchise!
