A Tennessee Republican’s attempt to turn a heated redistricting hearing into a pro-Trump spectacle quickly spiraled into chaos on Wednesday after security stopped him from entering the chamber wearing a Trump flag as a cape. The stunt has also attracted boos, chants, and another flashpoint in the state’s explosive congressional map battle.
TikTok user and Tennessee candidate Allie Phillips captured the moment when Representative Todd Warner, a Republican lawmaker from Tennessee, arrived at the special legislative session in Nashville. Wagner came in draped in a Trump 2024 flag while protesters packed the galleries and hallways to oppose a proposed congressional redistricting plan critics say would weaken the state’s only majority-Black district.
Before Warner could enter the legislative chamber, security officers intervened and removed the makeshift cape, as seen in Phillips’ TikTok video. The moment drew loud reactions from demonstrators already furious over the Republican-backed effort to redraw Tennessee’s congressional map.
Inside the hearing, signs reading “No Jim Crow Maps,” “Hands Off Our Vote,” and “This Will Backfire” were raised as tensions escalated between lawmakers and activists. State troopers later had to order some demonstrators to leave the House gallery as the session continued. The uploader of the TikTok video has also called Warner’s stunt “truly disgusting behavior.”
The redistricting push comes after pressure from President Donald Trump and Republican leaders seeking to strengthen GOP control in Congress ahead of the 2026 midterms. Critics argue the proposal is designed to fracture Democratic voting power in urban areas, particularly in and around Nashville.
People online are mocking the Trump cape
Warner, however, framed the controversy regarding the redistricting battle as proof that Trump supporters are being unfairly targeted. According to Warner, in a social media statement following the incident, “I stand with President Donald J. Trump. I stand for Tennessee. And I will never apologize for it.”
Because of Warner’s stance and his stunt with the Trump 2024 cape, he has further drawn backlash online, particularly on platforms such as Reddit and X. One user even went on a rant about the Republican representative, “MAGA has done generations’ worth of damage to our country.”
Others didn’t mince words and even regarded MAGA Republicans as a cult, one that supposedly worships the US President, “Cult gonna cult. Incredible he doesn’t see how [expletive] dumb he looks. But…again. Cult. They’re so [expletive] [expletive].” On the other side of the spectrum, however, many people have praised Warner’s actions for allegedly having “triggered leftists in the State Capitol.”
