Donald Trump’s latest rally in front of a cheering MAGA crowd has left many Minnesotans outraged. The former president spent much of his speech mocking Rep. Ilhan Omar’s hijab and delivering harsh slurs about Somalia, drawing chants of “SEND HER BACK!” from supporters.
The backlash was immediate over on Reddit. One commenter summed it up:
“I was almost worried about Lindell. But with Trump putting a target on Minnesota like this and isolating the entire Somali community, I think we’re going to see a new record turnout in Minnesota and Walz will take it easily.”
Minnesota is home to one of the largest Somali communities in the United States. For many, Trump’s words were a direct attack on neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and friends who have contributed to the state’s cultural and economic life.
The state’s reaction has been a mix of disbelief and anger. Critics argue that such language, cheered by crowds, fuels division and racism at a time when Minnesota has already seen its share of social and political tension. “Imagine Obama doing this!” wrote another Reddit user, reflecting the shock many feel at the stark contrast in political discourse.
Trump’s supporters at the rally, however, seemed undeterred by the outrage, embracing his rhetoric as a call to action and a rejection of what they perceive as political correctness. The divide in Minnesota’s response underscores the growing tension between progressive urban centers and more conservative rural areas, particularly in a state with a significant immigrant population.
For many Minnesotans, the speech was a reminder that while political figures may move on, the impact of words and the communities they target remain very real. The debate is now expected to shape voter engagement in the upcoming elections, as activists and community leaders rally to counter what they view as a harmful narrative.
