Rumor has turned to reality. When we first reported on a potential Twisted Metal TV series, fans were skeptical if the project would move forward. We even questioned the relevancy of a Twisted Metal adaptation nearly 25 years after the original game. Well, now we have confirmation. As per Variety, Sony Pictures has announced that a TV series based around the 1995 PlayStation game is going ahead.
With writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick taking the helm, fans can expect a high-level action comedy in the same vein as Deadpool. With Deadpool 3 on the horizon, this may explain why the third installation in the series recently added two new writers Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux.
While details were relatively scarce, a loose synopsis was provided to Variety via Sony Pictures:
The show is about a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.”
This announcement follows on the heels of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us which will star Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey who both had roles in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Until a later date, fans will be left speculating at potential plot points. Will our protagonist be one of the idiosyncratic characters from the Twisted Metal roster? What other characters can we expect to see on the screen? One thing is for sure; we can likely expect to see the same self-aware style of comedy deployed in the Deadpool series. Though it seems unlikely we will see Sweet Tooth do a front-facing monologue while breaking the fourth wall.
