Nintendo launched the Twitch app on the Switch today, and it can be downloaded for free from the eShop. If you’ve ever wanted to play Animal Crossing, but then watch other people play Animal Crossing, then this is the app you’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, some functions are missing, so if you’re used to using the Twitch website or app, you may be a bit disappointed.
Twitch Now Available on Nintendo Switch
One major limitation to the Switch’s version of the Twitch app is that you will not be able to see a stream’s chat, either in handheld mode or when docked. It’s not surprising that the Switch would limit you in this way, as trying to join in the chatting fun would be pretty much impossible. The good news is that there’s a workaround: by scanning a QR code, you can follow along with the chat on your phone. It might be a little bit awkward, especially if you’re watching in handheld mode, but it’s better than nothing.
If you’re a Twitch streamer yourself then you’ll also need to find other options: the Twitch app is purely for watching. Again, this isn’t shocking. But again, it means that if you’re looking for a more complete Twitch experience then you’ll have to look elsewhere. You can, however, scan a QR code to sign in to your account on the Switch app. This will no doubt make the sign-in process a lot easier, especially if you’re one of those responsible people who uses complex passwords for everything (me, I like to keep it simple).
The Switch has always lagged behind other consoles when it comes to apps – a lack of TV and movie streaming services is especially noticeable – so it’s nice to see Nintendo taking a step in the right direction.
