Ever since Supergirl found a new home on The CW, it’s been well known that her cousin Superman will be joining her. That’s a pretty big deal, as it puts the Arrowverse one step closer to having a Justice League of their own. Speculation regarding who would take on the role has been running for weeks, with many (myself included) hoping that Smallville’s Tom Welling would reprise the role, filling in the circle of all of The CW’s superhero shows. Well, it looks like those dreams won’t be coming true, but it seems we have a solid substitute in Tyler Hoechlin.
Hoechilin recently made a splash in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! and has played roles in Teen Wolf and Road To Perdition and is currently filming the Fifty Shades of Grey sequels. In other words, he’s a hungry young actor who’s talent has gone acknowledged but has yet to really break out in an iconic role. Superman could be just that, even if he does have to share the role with Henry Cavill. However, considering the fairly negative reception Cavill has gotten in the role, Hoechilin could be a reprieve for those disappointed with the DC movie universe so far. After all, many people were miffed that Grant Gustin wouldn’t be reprising his role as The Flash in the upcoming Justice League film due out in November 2017. Could Hoechlin create similar waves in the role of Superman?
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said “Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” going on claim “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.” Hopefully, fans will feel the same way when Supergirl returns this fall on The CW.
