It doesn’t get much more serious than health care and hospitals, but you’d never know it from the UMass sign. The large electric sign reading “UmassMemorial” treated some observant Worcester residents to a juvenile joke when the first two letters seemingly burnt out earlier this week. Tensions around health care have been running high since Trump‘s re-election, and attacks on scientific research by the administration have only worsened the problem. A cheap laugh at some blown fuses or dead bulbs in the UMass Memorial sign might be just the treatment Worcester needs.
Worcester Gets Tootiful Message From Mass
Some people love bunny-fur hats. Some people love a good butt joke. There are entire corners of the internet devoted to giggling at goofy signs, and it’s easy to see why. Two darkened letters transformed a hospital’s sign into an injection of unexpected comedy, and a free laugh is always nice. Thankfully, the rest of the UMassMemorial sign in Worcester remained lit, and other clear markings ensured the health center remained safely accessible.
A Reddit post about the situation by u/jokingonyou garnered over 4k upvotes and numerous likes, so it’s safe to say Worcester and its outside admirers are up for a chuckle right about now. Many seized the opportunity to crack jokes of their own. “Proctology just moved into that building,” said one commenter. Another was quick to vouch for the hospital’s quality, despite the malfunctioning sign,
To be honest though, Umass Hospitals are world class. Saved my life MULTIPLE times.
Electric signs go dead all the time, of course, but the thing about jokes is that they’re all about timing. Between the rally for health care in D.C. and the outspoken voices at protests around the U.S., it’s obvious hospitals were already on the minds of many. Worcester was the perfect audience for the UMass Memorial sign outage. That said, residents may prefer their hospitals a little less funny and a little better lit going forward.
