A TikTok creator who works as an OB-GYN shared a video addressing allegations from a medical resident about her experience in a training program at the University of Washington. According to the video, the resident alleged she experienced racism from an attending physician.
Dr. Jennifer Lincoln (@drjenniferlincoln)’s TikTok went viral after sharing the allegations against the University of Washington. According to her, a resident, described in the video as a Black woman training to become an OB-GYN, was dismissed from the University after an alleged racist encounter. The video claims the resident raised concerns about the feedback she received, saying it was inconsistent. According to the video, an attending physician is heard saying, “I no longer give feedback to residents of color.”
After this happened, the future OBGYN was shocked by what they did next. She was referred to a monitoring program that is typically used for those with substance abuse issues, despite claims in the video that she had no history of substance use.
Later, she would struggle to progress in the program due to paperwork delays. She has since been dismissed from her program after the initial conversation and entering into the substance abuse program against her will to maintain her position. On top of this, they scrutinized her for a previous ADHD diagnosis. All of this information was revealed in her GoFundMe for filing a class action.
The oversights that continuously plagued this OBGYN-in-training led to disaster. Not only did she lose her chance in the University of Washington’s program, but she was also left in debt. Because of the two months she was required to spend, according to the video in a substance abuse program, she missed out on income. According to Dr. Lincoln’s video, she’s now “unemployed and owes more than $150,000 in student loans.”
What’s concerning is that Dr. Lincoln said this isn’t the first time something like that happened at the University of Washington. No, another resident, described in the video as a Black male, was also sent to the “same health program for evaluation.” The evaluation report came back, and nothing matched up. It denied his ADHD diagnosis and used the wrong birth date, among many other errors. In the end, he tried to challenge the report and was forced into a brain MRI instead.
Now, the wronged residents are moving forward with a class action lawsuit to have their voices heard. Dr. Lincoln asks, “What does it say about our system that a black woman is told she’s no longer worth of feedback? And when she asks for mental health support, she experiences racial discrimination?”
This video drew attention from TikTokers across the U.S. who believe in taking a stand and speaking out. Commenters continue to share their opinions about the situation, some furious and others calling for justice. One commenter shared, “African American here. Welcome to the black American experience.” Another commenter stated, “I hope they both win that lawsuit, cover their school cost and more and get to be the doctors they deserve/we need them to be.” Other commenters questioned: “What does it say about our systems???”
At this point, attention has shifted from the claims themselves to how the case will unfold.
