Having roommates isn’t supposed to be a war zone where there are always disagreements and fights. After all, you would want the place you are living in to be peaceful. Well, one Utah man wasn’t lucky enough. He shared how he threw out moldy and expired food while some of his roommates were on vacation in their home country. So far, so good, right? But no. When the roommates got back, they were upset that the Utah man threw their expired food. It would be reasonable to get over it, but instead, they threatened to sue him.
The Utah man explained that he was moving out, so management asked him to clean the fridge before he went. He proceeded to throw away expired and moldy food, which is something anyone would have assumed was okay to do. His roommates, however, had a different opinion. They threatened him with legal action if he didn’t pay them $250. Not only that, but they also claimed that he threw out food he didn’t remember seeing or throwing out. The whole situation is quite silly and unreasonable. This might be the reason why the roommates changed their minds when the Utah man said he contacted his family lawyer. He wrote in an update:
“I told them I contacted my family lawyer (who may or may not exist) and suddenly they all had better things to do than starting a lawsuit… go figure.”
People Reacting to the Utah Man’s Situation
A lot of people found the whole situation to be unreasonable. They also believed that the Utah man’s roommates won’t carry out their threat. One person wrote, “I wouldn’t be worried at all their [sic] just trying to press you into giving them $250.” Another reassured the Utah man that nothing was going to happen. “It’s highly unlikely that would (1) be successful suing you or (2) getting that amount of money if they were somehow successful. Rotten food has no value,” they said. Someone even said, “If they actually file, you can file a counter claim for your cleaning services. They won’t file though.”
Several others even encouraged the Utah man to let his roommates sue, saying that it won’t go anywhere. “Tell the idiots to go right ahead. There ain’t a lawyer who would even consider taking the case,” one wrote. Another said, “tell them good luck.” One Redditor also stated, “lol let them sue they are not going to get anything.” The Utah man was smart enough to claim that his family lawyer, who probably doesn’t even exist, was involved. Just when I think I won’t see any stupid situations, I’m proven wrong.
